Job summary

We are offering a unique opportunity to develop a career in Health and Safety in an acute healthcare setting.

You will be joining a small but dedicated award-winning team to learn all about how health and safety works in an acute hospital and the role that the Health and Safety Advisor plays in keeping a large diverse workforce safe in a modern healthcare environment.

Using a recognised apprenticeship scheme over 2 years we will help you to add health and safety qualifications to your existing portfolio so that you will be equipped to play a full part in the team.

Ideally you will already have experience and an understanding of healthcare in an acute hospital and your current role might already give you an insight into health and safety through involvement in risk assessments, moving and handling, respirator fit testing, infection prevention and control, safety inspections etc.

Please note that the successful applicant will be expected to complete the course associated with this role within the specified 24 months. On completion of the initial apprenticeship, you must be prepared to undertake a professional qualification in Health and Safety eg NEBOSH diploma.

During this time, you will be paid a percentage of the band you are working towards.

Main duties of the job

The eventual aim is to help you become a competent Health and Safety Advisor able to advise the workforce on how to best create a safe and healthy workplace.

You will work throughout the Trust and report directly to the Head of Health and Safety.

As part of your new role, you will oversee the Trust's respirator face fit testing (following suitable training)

  • Support the Head of Health and Safety in implementing, developing and monitoring health and safety issues in order to develop a positive health and safety culture throughout the Trust
  • To advise the Trusts managers and staff on relevant legislation and best practice
  • Providing specialist support and advice on health and safety and risk management to relevant committees.
  • Provision of expert training, guidance and instruction on risk assessment and health, safety and welfare matters for all business units and staff at all levels to ensure that the Trust minimises risk, meets its statutory obligations and achieves high safety standards; to include Trust New Manager induction, apprentice inductions, health and safety awareness, Risk assessment, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), incident investigation process and risk management etc.
  • Carrying out safety inspections and audits across Trust sites: making recommendations and following up on actions.
  • Deputising for the Head of Health and Safety in their absence
  • Undertake workplace and task specific risk assessments and action findings in accordance with Trust processes/guidelines

  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information to all levels of the organisation concisely and confidently
  • Good numeracy skills
  • Practical problem-solving approach to health and safety issues
  • Ability to interact, analyse and present information
  • Ability to use computer

Desirable

  • Experience of Health and Safety, Fit testing and Infection Control

Qualifications

  • 3 GCSE's grade A-C or 4-9
  • Must be willing to complete apprenticeship associated with role within 24 months
  • On completion of apprenticeship be willing to work towards degree level professional qualification eg NEBOSH diploma

  • Experience of onward reporting of incident data
  • Experience in use of Datix
