Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Specialist Nurses in Ophthalmology. The successful applicant will need to provide strong clinical leadership and be energising, inspiring and have the ability to empower others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective provision of patient care related to Ophthalmology. The applicant will be expected to undertake nurse led intravitreal clinics which establishes and maintains own workload in collaboration with Ophthalmology multidisciplinary team and demonstrates an ability to plan and work in accordance with the needs of the service. They will be expected to run triage, post op, and glaucoma clinics as required and assist in the ophthalmology department as required.

They will be a good team player and have excellent communication skills as they will be working with other specialist nurses, consultants, junior doctors, nursing staff and HCSW's.

They will ensure care delivery is in line with the appropriate regulatory body code of practice (e.g., NMC). Ensure a quality orientated approach to care, which recognises the needs and views of patients/clients and their carers (where applicable), placing the patient at the centre of all activities

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake nurse led intravitreal clinics and ensure specialist knowledge is such that any abnormalities can be identified and discussed with the medical team.

They will be expected to participate in triage and emergencies and post op and glaucoma clinics by adopting a clinical management approach, which is supportive, energetic, enthusiastic, dynamic and innovative and support the team to create an environment that is challenging, stimulating and supportive to individuals.

  • The post holder will be expected to perform nursing care assessment alerting teams to changes and making adjustments to planned care. The post holder will have the cognitive ability and motor skills to operate the equipment within the department .e.g. slit Lamps
  • Must have stereoscopic vision
  • Develop and maintain communication with the Multidisciplinary team. Communicate information of a complex, sensitive, emotive and/ or contentious nature.
  • Demonstrates a specialist knowledge and expertise in Ophthalmology, resulting from experience in the clinical area and post-registration study.
  • Communicate sensitive, complex information and advice to patients and their relatives in a clear, sensitive way to promote understanding.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise own workload ensuring both clinical commitments and other commitments are met. Identifies patients who are urgent cases, sees these as priority and plans a time to see remainder. Plans time for teaching, meetings, audits and guidelines.
  • Good hand/ eye co-ordination, manual dexterity, precision and accuracy required to provide specific Ophthalmology procedures.
  • Refer patients to other health professionals as appropriate.
  • To have keyboard and database skills to facilitate documentation and information gathering.
  • Have good computer literacy skills to maintain communication networks and for research use.
  • Holds full UK driving licence and has own transport to enable movement between hospital sites and business travel.
  • Responsible for providing specialist evidence based advice to all disciplines of staff, patients and carers relating to Ophthalmic conditions Provides specialist advice relating to individual patients and groups of patients in relation to Ophthalmic conditions

  • Contributes to the development of plans of care for patients who need input from the Ophthalmology team.

  • Uses audit and observation to ensure that other staff follow relevant policies.
  • Has responsibility with other members of the team for ensuring that training is provided on Ophthalmic issues to all staff from a variety of professions.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new equipment and services in relation to Ophthalmic conditions .
  • Run Nurse Led Clinics to provide highly skilled care on behalf of the Ophthalmology Consultants for patients with Ophthalmic conditions g and provide specialist nursing advice for patients.

  • Responsible for recording patient information. Both written and using computer software as appropriate.
