Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a 10 PA Consultant Paediatrician with community general paediatric skills to join our diverse team at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust. Our current team includes Community Paediatricians, General Paediatricians who have developed a specialist interest, Specialty doctors and Specialist nurses who live locally or commute from around the region. We are also well supported by our administrative team. We would welcome applications from either Community, General Paediatricians, or those within 6 months of either completion of their CCT or who have qualified through the CESR process. We would offer training, and support where required. There is no out of hours on call commitment in this post. This post has RCPCH approval.

Main duties of the job

The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Key Tasks

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • To share knowledge with the Paediatrics Department.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Develop community paediatrics role and service development

About us

The post includes delivery of general community paediatric clinics in the Mid Nottinghamshire area (covering Newark/Ollerton/Mansfield/Ashfield) plus autism assessment clinics. Daytime (Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm) child protection on call is offered for social care requested medical assessments (section 47) for neglect and physical abuse on a rota basis. Special interests and skills of applicants will be considered and additional duties may include additional safeguarding, neurodisability/SEND, appraisal/supervision and teaching.

Candidates for the post must be registered with the GMC at the time of appointment, be a member of the RCPCH and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of receiving your CCT date at the time of the interview. The Consultant appointed will be expected to undertake the following duties:

  • Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department;
  • Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences;
  • Any responsibility which relates to a special interest;
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD. Time is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory; and
  • Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.

  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice

  • DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas

Experience

Essential

  • At least 2 years general professional training in paediatrics
  • Usually 5 years higher specialist training
  • Broad experience of all clinical aspects of community child health and neurodisability
  • Experience of childhood behaviour problems recognition and assessment
  • Detailed knowledge of all aspects of child protection work
  • Experience in child protection/safeguarding to at least level 3 competencies
  • Knowledge of national policy, strategy, and the legal framework relating to looked after children including the adoption process

  • SPIN, experience or expertise in other relevant areas
