Job summary

King's provides a comprehensive medical and surgical bariatric service for adults in line with NICE guidelines. King's is a preferred provider for bariatric surgery. The medical and surgical services work closely together to provide best quality of care for patients. Surgically the full range of procedures including gastric banding, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, sleeve gastrectomy and complex revision surgery are offered laparoscopically.

The Bariatric service is part of the Bariatric/Upper GI/HPB firm and consists of the medical staff noted above as well as dieticians, specialist nurses and specialist physicians. There are dedicated bariatric clinics and a joint specialist MDT with GSTT and Bromley. King's performs around 600 Bariatric operations each year.

Main duties of the job

The overall objective of the Program is to train individuals who will be specialists in the field of Minimally Invasive HPB and UGI Surgery. It is essential that the fellow have previous experience at a reasonably senior level to allow him/ her to take advantage of the training opportunities available in the unit, and also to ensure that he/ she will be able to manage a busy unit with complex upper GI and hepatobiliary problems and high morbidity patients e.g Bariatric.

The expectation is that the postholder will experience and achieve the following:

Outpatient and ward

Participation in outpatient clinics

Participation in MDMs

Lead ward daily ward rounds

Communicate with and advise external referrals 6 Surgery outcome/ theatre exposure

Pancreatic resection (open and laparoscopic)

Liver resection (open and laparoscopic)

Laparoscopic/ open cholecystectomy

Surgery for benign HPB conditions

Bariatric surgery and Surgery for Benign UGI conditions

Elective and Emergency General surgery

Academic outcome

The post holder will be expected to conduct clinical research under the direction of Prof Ameet Patel. The goal will be to present papers at meetings such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery.

Extramural Educational Meetings: The fellow will be provided with funds to attend at least one meeting each academic year.

Each candidate must have had adequate training or experience in a General Surgical Training Program. Previous experience in Upper Gastrointestinal and / or Hepatobiliary Surgery is desirable and this post is most suitable for those who are equivalent to SPR year 5 or 6 level.

Candidates who are post CCST or equivalent would also find it useful to consolidate their experience prior to looking for a consultant post.

Trainee will have completed their MRCS and will have an up to date certification for Adult Life Support training.
