Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Registered Band 6 Specialist Nurse to join our Sexual Health Intervention and Prevention (SHIP) Team. We are seeking an individual with the flexibility, enthusiasm, and commitment to make a real difference to patient care within our service.
As a key member of the SHIP team, you will lead on partner notification, contact tracing and results management across Sexual Health and HIV services. You will provide supervision and leadership to the Band 4 results team, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of the results pathway, while working closely with colleagues across multidisciplinary teams to maintain robust systems and investigate errors when required.
In addition, you will play an essential role in supporting SHIP team nurses in providing sexual and reproductive healthcare to a diverse patient group, including vulnerable populations and those under 18. You will be expected to deputise for Nurse Practitioners in the SHIP team and support them with referrals into the SHIP service.
We are looking for an inspirational clinical leader with dual training in sexual and contraceptive health, including LOC SDI, and awareness of safeguarding processes. You will bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and support colleagues, while showing a strong commitment to teamwork, innovation and delivering the highest standards of patient care.
Main duties of the job
- To provide autonomous nursing care to meet the sexual health and contraceptive needs of our patient population, including assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment for the individual patient group.
- To work within the SHIP team, supporting with referrals, audits and managing safeguarding cases - whilst also being a point of call for advice for the rest of the Sexual health and HIV services.
- Lead on the partner notification pathway and provide professional and clinical leadership to the results team.
- To lead on the results pathway for Sexual health and HIV services, liaising with the MDT, investigating errors and feeding back to staff.
- To support the role of the Senior Charge Nurse and Nurse Practitioners in the implementation of a strategic development plan for nursing and nurse led services within the department.
- To be actively involved and supportive of Senior Nursing staff in the development and implementation of a programme of nursing audit and research within the department.

- To contribute to the clinical leadership and of the Specialist Health Improvement team within the Sexual Health and HIV services, demonstrating a supportive and flexible leadership approach and a proactive, responsible attitude so as to promote confidence in the team and the service.
- To provide professional leadership and clinical supervision to the Band 4 Result Administrator team.
- To provide nurse delivered sexual health and contraceptive care in accordance with current service protocol and competency framework.
- To support the senior nurses to ensure the service specification for intervention and prevention is implemented across the service.
- In conjunction with senior SHIP nurse practitioner contribute and provide robust training, procedures and processes for partner notification, contact tracing, results management within Sexual Health and HIV services.
- To be responsible for leading on Partner Notification for the department.
- To participate in two weekly/monthly meetings with MDT (PRUH/DH/Synnovis/ Becker management) to ensure effective results pathway. This includes ensuring a robust result pathway is carried out between the laboratory, system and the clinic.
- To escalate result queries/issues to relevant parties including completing an in phase if errors occur.
- In conjunction with the senior SHIP nurse practitioner complete route cause analysis for any errors that arise and escalate appropriately to the relevant teams: Becker/EPIC/Laboratory.
- To communicate with the Senior Service Manager and Service Delivery Manager with results processes/pathways to ensure full understanding and clarity especially if changes/adaptations are needed.
- In conjunction with the senior SHIP nurse practitioner and service delivery manager to review and analyse the result pathway and to manage obstacles to reduce risks, errors and ensure best patient care.
- To monitor competencies and to update the Results administrator competency book and SOP when appropriate.
- To facilitate clinician understanding of the results pathway and ensure this is carried out.
- To review and analyse clinician test requests to ensure tests are requested correctly/ appropriately and to be proactive at teaching staff when assistance is needed. This may also include escalating if incorrect pathways continue.
- To contribute to and provide robust procedures and processes for the provision of health promotion, risk management/reduction, behavioural interventions and focussed psychological support for patients attending Sexual Health and HIV Services.
- To support the senior nurses in exploring current practice, identifying areas for development, and contributing to service changes as required.
