Staff Nurse - Planned Investigation Unit

Job summary

We are looking for driven and ambitious Band 5 Registered Staff Nurses, who are committed to delivering exceptional care for a diverse range of conditions.

The Planned Investigation Unit (PIU) on the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site is a busy nurse-led day-case unit that sees patients from a range of specialties. These include Neurology, Haematology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, and many more, where a variety of specialist infusions and treatments are provided. The unit is currently open Monday to Friday, 08:00-17:00, with the possibility of expanding hours in the future.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the day-to-day delivery of treatment within the nurse-led unit.

  • Work as part of a team to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives, and carers.

  • Act as an effective role model.

  • Undertake audits where required.

  • Manage time effectively to ensure smooth workflow.

  • Ensure nursing care delivered is of a high standard and complies with local and Trust guidelines.

  • Deliver, maintain and monitor within agreed standards of nursing care with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of medical patients who require specialist treatment. The specialties include Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Haematology, Endocrine and other Medical specialties.
  • Ensure that nursing care is patient focused and that patient dignity and privacy are maintained at all times.
  • To become competent in the care and practice of Venesection.
  • Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.
  • Takes a pro-active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
  • Takes responsibility for the clinical area.
  • Able to assess the short-term needs of the clinical area and ensures that they are met. Will seek advice and support from outside the clinical area.
  • Ensures that all clinical and legal nursing documents are completed accurately and legibly, and that junior staff understand their relevance.
  • Use reflective practice as a method of ensuring that appropriate effective nursing care is delivered to each patient.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, and to monitor their effects.
  • Ensure competency to use and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
  • Reports incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately and takes remedial action to reduce the risk in the future.
