Job summary

This post is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, experienced pharmacist with strategic vision, drive and excellent clinical and leadership skills to work as a consultant pharmacist in haematology-oncology & ATMPs.

As the Consultant Pharmacist in Haematology-oncology & ATMPs for King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the post holder will have leadership and management responsibility for the development and delivery of effective pharmacy services for haematology & oncology, including clinical delivery of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) within these clinical specialities. The post holder will provide consultant level expert care to haematology & oncology patients including novel SACT & ATMPs, stem cell transplant, haemoglobinopathies and rare haematological disorders. The post holder will work in conjunction with stakeholders to deliver an efficient, high quality, professional and well-coordinated service capable of meeting all statutory, regulatory and NHS requirements relating to complex medication delivery within haematology & oncology including novel SACT & ATMPs.

Applicants will work with a high degree of autonomy, have excellent communication skills, an ability to manage complex relationships across multiple organisations and be able to demonstrable a high level of work in expert practice, research, education and professional leadership.

Main duties of the job

As the Consultant Pharmacist, Haematology-oncology & ATMPs, the post holder will have leadership and management responsibility for the development and delivery of effective pharmacy services for haematology & oncology, including clinical delivery of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) within these clinical specialities. The post holder will provide consultant level expert care to haematology & oncology patients including systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) & stem cell transplant, haemoglobinopathies and rare haematological disorders

They will work in conjunction with stakeholders to develop the provision of an efficient, high quality, professional and well-coordinated service capable of meeting all statutory, regulatory and NHS requirements relating to complex medication delivery within haematology & oncology including novel SACT & ATMPs.

The post holder will have a high degree of autonomy and authority at a network level leading and representing on all medicines finance, prescribing and medicines optimisation matters related to SACT, ATMPs & other medicines used within haematology & oncology.

In line with national guidance, the Consultant Pharmacist, Haematology-oncology & ATMPs has four main functions relating to expert clinical practice;professional leadership including evaluation and service development; education, mentoring and overview of practice; and research.

The key responsibilities of the post holder are:

  • Strategically leads pharmacy services for haematology & oncology for the Trust ensuring pharmacy led care is identified as an asset and a priority. Works in conjunction with colleagues to deliver the clinical pharmacy ATMP service within haematology-oncology.
  • To accept referrals from clinical staff regarding medicine use in haematology & oncology, providing expert opinion and consultancy support where appropriate.
  • Act as a role model and national expert in haematology and oncology, including ATMPs used within these clinical specialities, ensuring a consistently high level of pharmacy input in line with corporate objectives and NHS England policy.
  • To promote the safe use of medicines in haematology & oncology across the Trust, with a particular focus on systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) and the clinical delivery of ATMPs within haematology & oncology. Act as an expert resource in these practice areas across the Trust, the region and nationally.
  • To work with the relevant stakeholders in developing a model of care delivery for the introduction and management of new treatments used within haematology and oncology, including novel SACT and ATMPs, working closely with clinical trials, national commissioners and other external stakeholders to safely & effectively implement new treatments.
  • To lead education and development in medicines use in haematology & oncologyfor Trust staff and other staff working in these therapeutic areas regionally and nationally. Support education and development in ATMPs within haematology & oncology.
  • Ensure delivery of cost-effective prescribing across Kings College Hospital by working with commissioners to manage budgets, formulate cost improvement plans and monitor any potential savings.
  • Supporting commissioning processes for haematology, oncology and ATMPs with both the integrated care system (ICS) and Specialised Commissioning to ensure effective communication and data sharing are in place to support payment processes as needed.
  • To lead on developing innovative pharmacist focused service delivery pathways to ensure that those with unmet need are identified and treated.
  • To participate in consultant ward rounds & outpatient clinics across the Trust, patient monitoring and acting as the primary link for complex medication queries for haematology & oncology.
