Job summary

Dartford Dialysis Satellite Unit is based at Darent Valley Hospital. Our unit comprises of diverse team and promotes personal and professional development. You will be involved in assisting the Unit Manager to drive forward quality patient centred compassionate care as well as assisting and supporting the team to attain efficiency and sustain standards.

This is an ideal opportunity for a band 5 nurse to utilise and enhance their mentoring skills, leadership qualities, time management, and independent working. You will have 2 weeks supernumerary and the opportunity to work alongside senior nurses and practice development nurses. You will also have an Assessor and Supervisor assigned to you.

As a band 5 staff nurse, you are expected to understand the principle of haemodialysis including connecting and disconnecting patients on haemodialysis. You are required to commence patients on haemodialysis and discontinue treatment in a safe manner - as per protocols along with lining and priming of haemodialysis machines, troubleshooting complications, data input, stripping the machines. You will also have the opportunity to learn the assessment of fistulas/graphs including cannulations and management of Tunnelled Central Venous Catheters.

The unit opens from Monday to Saturday from 6.30am to 22.30 hours. We have 12 haemodialysis stations. We dialyse 36 patients in a day.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing independent holistic care to haemodialysis patients.
  • Assist and supports the senior nurses in the daily smooth running of the unit.
  • Cleaning of the equipment's - dialysis machines, bed, tables.
  • Lining, priming and stripping of the haemodialysis machines.
  • Monitoring patient observations and documentation of the findings.
  • Report to the senior nurses of any deviation from normal.
  • Supporting and mentoring registered nurses/health care assistants including appraisals.
  • CannulationandevaluationsofAVF,AVG,andCVC.
  • Connecting and disconnecting haemodialysis machine for AVF/AVG/linepatients.
  • Prioritise patient care based on individual needs.
  • Daily checking of the water plant systems document and report appropriately.
  • Involved in patient education and support any ongoing research studies in the unit.
  • Involved in assessment, planning and evaluation of care.
  • Maintain effective communication within the team at all times.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To ensure and promote the trust policies and protocols are adhered.
  • To participate in team meetings as required by your team leader.
  • To ensure your competency document are signed and dated.
  • Assigned nurse for six to seven patients and played a key role in the unit.
