Job summary

The post will be based at Denmark Hill and the proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional Activities. The On-Call commitment is for a 1:8 rota which is classed as Category A (5%).

As a senior employee of the Trust the postholder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts' patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:-

  • The provision of a first class clinical service

Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality

Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London

Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies

Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans

Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust

Main duties of the job

Together with the other clinical staff, to provide a service for all Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery patients at King's. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleague's periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical & Dental Education and clinical governance initiatives.

Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the Clinical Lead for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and the Ambulatory Care Division's management team.

To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.

To contribute to department's Audit and Clinical Governance Programme, participating in the trust's monthly local audit meeting, and attending the care group's monthly clinical governance meeting.

To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Dental Division's Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
