Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our experienced Endoscopy team here at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill site. At the Denmark Hill site we have 5 procedure rooms we scope on average 1000 patients per month. We have an establishment of almost 74 registered nurses.

The endoscopy unit is supported by a dynamic pre-assessment and PDN team. Our service provides both diagnostic and complex and innovative therapeutic endoscopic procedures and is led by experts in their field. The department is recognised at national and international level for its specialist procedures, demonstrated in several forums, conferences written papers over recent years. Applicants should have NMC registration and be able to demonstrate significant endoscopy experience including the ability to cope with complex management issues. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse with a broad range of endoscopy experience, audit skills, demonstrable leadership skills and the ability to actively contribute to service development. The successful applicant will be responsible for the co-ordination and management of all nursing evidence required for the JAG Accreditation process, and to support the overall service standards required by JAG.

The successful l candidate will have an opportunity to be part of the endoscopy team who have achieved JAG accreditation since 2019. A key playing in driving the department into the future of our continued success.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have NMC registration and be able to demonstrate significant endoscopy experience including the ability to cope with complex management issues. The aim of this role is to support the provision of high quality patient care within the endoscopy unit. The candidate will be expected to maintain and improve quality in accordance to JAG and Trust standards, while also maintaining efficiency in a busy unit.

The expectation is the candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills working with all members of the multi-disciplinary team on a daily basis, including nurses, service managers and clinicians.

This role requires the successful candidate to be highly independent with minimal day to day supervision. Maintaining and writing new policies with efficient and detailed record keeping and action plans. It requires exceptional time management and keep to deadlines. They will need to have confidence to present audits and action plans at regular user group meetings.

They should also be responsible for the development of staff to facilitate the extensive audit programme to meet JAG standards. They will also support the team in preparing for CQC visits and act as a quality champion in all areas of the department. This will include regular surveys of patient and staff satisfaction. Ensure the department is achieving high scores in monthly Trust quality audits.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will help build strong, productive relationships with clinical and non -clinical team members to ensure strategic objectives are met. To maintain clinical credibility by acting regularly as a clinical practitioner in own area of expertise.

To always act as an excellent role model to the other members of the endoscopy team.

Teaching and engaging others in audit and quality improvement

To maintain an overview of the JAG standards and how these are being delivered across the endoscopy service.

To proactively consider the nursing evidence required to meet JAG accreditation standards and work with the wider endoscopy team to ensure this is obtained and archived appropriately.

To work with the nursing managers and matron to ensure the timely undertaking of the Trust audits and completion of the audit cycle. Including evaluation and appropriate action planning.

To independently perform a staff satisfaction survey annually and feedback results to the wider endoscopy team.

Commitment to standards, principles and long term vision of the department.

Audit and Quality Improvement

To coordinate all clinical audit activity within Endoscopy; work with Clinical Leads and service managers to ensure audit plan is managed and meets agreed deadlines.

To lead on all JAG Accreditation nursing clinical audits within the department.

To lead and co-ordinate the recommendations and action plans of all clinical audits to provide assurance that the Endoscopy service is achieving and working towards continual improvements in clinical practice.

To maintain accurate records clinical audits in endoscopy via a shared electronic filing system.

To identify and prioritise local requirements for quality improvement through liaison with the multi-disciplinary team.

To perform a staff and endoscopy users feedback survey and complete the audit cycle annually.

To provide leadership, QI, JAG standards and audit management specialist advice and support to staff within endoscopy.

Support staff in their local improvement work and develop quality improvement and audit skills in the Team Leaders.

To ensure that patient and staff feedback are integral to the planning and delivery of work programmes to inform decision-making.

Governance / Quality Control

To work closely with the Consultant Clinical Lead, Training Lead and Audit Lead to ensure the whole multi-disciplinary team are working towards the annual and five yearly JAG Accreditation submission.

To ensure an effective mechanism for disseminating new and updated nursing guidelines is in place.

To report the recommendations from nursing audits to the Endoscopy Users Group, ensuring authors are informed, relevant guidelines are updated and changes in practice are implemented with support from relevant leads. To be an active member of the Endoscopy Users Group.

To support and actively engage with the preparation for CQC and other quality inspections.

To collate evidence to demonstrate compliance with JAG Standards and lead on preparation for five-yearly JAG Accreditation submission.

To develop and implement work programmes for patient experience activity which improve the ways in which the service gains the views of endoscopy patients and users of the service.

To support transformational projects within the endoscopy service that involve patients, family and carers to achieve improved clinical outcomes and experiences.

To develop a programme of work which reviews and maintains access to up to date patient information for all.

To participate in relevant / appropriate Trust approved research projects conducted within the department.

Leadership

To act as an excellent role model for high quality care to engage junior staff in audit, improving knowledge and skills within the endoscopy nursing team.

To create a physical and psychological environment conducive to the provision of high quality care and learning.

To support the Pre-Assessment Lead in steering the service in line with JAG standards.

To lead on standardising all endoscopy documentation to promote a professional and organised service.

To attend Trust-wide Audit meetings to ensure consistency across specialities where appropriate and sharing of ideas.

To attend the Endoscopy Users Group to present JAG report. Where required present at the Endoscopy risk and governance meetings.

To facilitate the cascade of information to all endoscopy staff, support staff discussion and respond to feedback.

To promote the work of the Endoscopy Department within the Trust.

Education and Training

To facilitate the training of a core group of staff within endoscopy to provide all elements of the audit cycle to maintain a consistently high level of service and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for improvements within the service.

To present audit findings and recommendations to nursing staff through clinical audit days.

To promote the development of an evidenced-based approach to clinical care.

To work with the Endoscopy PDN to ensure learning from patient experience is integrated with feedback from other sources such as complaints and incidents and is used to inform education and training for endoscopy staff.

To liaise and work closely with the Endoscopy PDN to ensure all learning is embedded, staff development is recorded as part of JAG.

To attend Regional and National Endoscopy Conferences as appropriate.

Reporting and Analysis

To provide a quarterly report to the Endoscopy Users Group as to the status of the Audit Plans

To ensure the accuracy of the Endoscopy Users Group minutes and oversee the resulting action plan.

To produce annual reports on the results of patient and staff feedback audits.

Research and Service Development

To work closely with the Service Manager and Endoscopy Matron to review both current and proposed capacity and demand through the provision of clinical expertise and insight into endoscopy processes and data in order to identify shortfalls and determine change required to deliver sustainable improvement.
