Job summary
To effectively lead, develop, contribute to and influence Acute Oncology Services (AOS) within the trust, South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) and nationally to enable partnership development across services.
To provide timely, efficient and effective operational management support for the Acute Oncology Nursing Team assisting the Head of Nursing, Clinical Director and General Manager for Cancer to ensure that this service is responsive, innovative and provided to the highest possible standard.
To problem solve as appropriate, and develop and implement lasting solutions in conjunction with clinical colleagues. To be a key member of the Cancer Management Team, taking full responsibility for actions and for keeping other team members fully informed at all times.
To be responsible for writing, implementing and evaluating clinical guidelines, and promoting practice developments within the clinical governance framework to ensure local and national objectives are achieved especially Acute Oncology, Cancer of Unknown Primary and Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression Quality Standards and guidance.
To attend, chair and co-chair AOS-related operational, and project group meetings locally and SELCA group and develop action plans from the meeting and be able to influence key personnel for local delivery.
Main duties of the job
- To lead the Acute Oncology Nursing team across the trust
- To be professionally accountable for all work undertaken and to practice at an advanced level of professional autonomy and accountability that is within the AO service, the KCH polices and NMC Codes of Conduct
- To independently receive and make referrals and lead a caseload of patients with complex AO needs across health settings
- To utilise advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based knowledge in the management of patients with high complex presentations
- To make independent clinical decisions and initiate investigations, care/treatment and technological intervention within an agreed framework
- To direct and use the results of specific investigations to assist formation of diagnosis and plan patient management with accurate patient records as per the trust guidance
- To monitor, evaluate and critically appraise AOS nursing practice and to modify approaches to clinical care as necessary
- To lead the development of clinical expertise in AOS nursing enabling nurses to develop advanced assessment, decision-making and prescribing skills
- To work with key personnel and wider MDT, involved in care of cancer patients with acute presentations of cancer or malignancy of unknown origins

- To ensure that all Acute Oncology Services and provided within the Hospital setting, inpatient and outpatient, are of a consistently high quality.
- To be accountable for performance of the hospital services against all key nursing dimensions within the performance management framework, taking corrective action as required.
- To help the clinical teams within the Acute Oncology Services to resolve their operational issues on a day to day basis, which will range from basic administration issues to more complex approaches requiring the support and agreement of large teams of people.
- To investigate and respond to formal complaints as required, taking steps to ensure that the lessons are learnt from issues which give rise to complaints and that these issues are not repeated.To ensure the establishment and maintenance of good relationships and communication, promoting a culture where clinical and other staff are actively involved in decisions on how services are provided and targets delivered.
