Band 5 Senior Nurse on Orthodontics

An exciting opportunity has arisen to apply for a Senior Dental Nurse role within the Dental Institute on the Orthodontic department.

The post holder will join the Dental Nurse Services team and be responsible for being the Senior Nurse on Orthodontics, providing a high standard of care and demonstrating strong clinical dental nursing skills. Working with all team on department is essential to provide an efficient and effective service ensuring Health and Safety and cross infection policies are met and maintained at all times.

A high level of communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work as part of a team and help manage a lead the nurses on department. As a senior you will be required to ensure the daily running of the department is carried out, any problems that can't be mitigated on department you should ensure they are escalated to the appropriate team. Other responsibilities include, completing daily and weekly rota's, allocate nursing staff within the department, carry out yearly appraisals, complete MEG audits for both Orthodontics and other departments, attend daily morning huddles with the rest of the senior nurse team along with other tasks that contribute to the running of the department.

Main duties of the job

  • Line manage the dental nurse team within the respective department ensuring that standards are met at all times. Be responsible for the day-to-day management of clinics/department and have an active role in Health & Safety, Governance and Infection Control issues
  • Provide a high level of dental nursing care for all patients. This will include patients with special needs, vulnerable children and adults, the elderly, mentally and physically disabled patients, patients suffering terminal illness, infectious risk, medically compromised, anxious/phobic patients and people with challenging behaviour
  • Deliver a high standard of chairside assistance across the whole range of dental specialities, supporting all grades of clinicians. These will include dental undergraduate and postgraduate students and experienced clinical
  • Attend daily huddles to ensure sickness and absence on all departments is covered as and when necessary across all sites as and when necessary.
  • Co-operate and participate with the Dental Team Education Centre, ensuring that all trainee dental nurses are exposed to all aspects of the department with opportunities to be assessed as appropriate
  • The post holder will actively promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the department and be an effective role model for best practice. The post holder will be flexible in the provision of clinical support to provide cover for the allocated department.

  • To take responsibility for and ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge
  • To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other members of the dental team in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment
  • Receive and act on the instructions from the dentist regarding patient treatment, ensuring that instructions are carried out and reporting any relevant information or change in the condition of a patient to the dentist
  • Provide chairside clinical suppor
  • To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the service, ensuring effective communication at all time
  • To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all dental nursing staff within the department
  • To assist the dental nurse managers in ensuring that there is adequate service provision and staff to assist with pandemic incidents in line with the Pandemic People Management Policy. This may include swabbing of staff, FIT testing and ensuring appropriate PPE is place and that infection control measures are in place to protect patients and staf

People Management /Performance

  • Supervise the qualified and trainee dental nurses allocated to the department, to ensure the smooth operational running of the clinic and to provide appropriate clinical experience; allocating dental nurses to meet the day-to-day needs of the department.
  • Ensure that all dental nurses allocated to the department are conversant with medical emergency procedures, health and safety regulations and the accident and patient complaints reporting mechanisms
  • Be responsible for the departmental drug cupboard keys, order the necessary drugs and check drug expiry dates and dispense drugs on the instructions of the clinician
  • Stock and check the emergency trolleys within the department on a daily basis as directed by the Dental Nurse Services Manager. Check all equipment is fully operational and all drugs are in dat
  • Maintain and control departmental stock including, equipment and supplies, and submit requisitions for repair and replacement as necessary. Take part in meetings with company reps, to discuss items required
  • Advise and liaise with the clinical lead and the Dental Nurse Services Manager regarding departmental issues, problems or deficiencies in service
  • Dispose competently and safely of hazardous or toxic waste or materials in accordance with appropriate guidelines and protocols
  • Assist with the implementation and integration of new initiatives into the department
