Job summary
The Regional Neurosciences Unit at Kings College Hospital was formed by the merging of sub-regional units located at The Brook General Hospital and the Neurosurgical Unit of the Maudsley Hospital. The Unit has a catchment area of > 4 million covering South East London, Kent and East Sussex. Kings College Hospital contains departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Neuro Rehabilitation and Neuropathology. The Institute of Psychiatry is a post-graduate institute of the University of London. There are 65 neurosurgical beds, 12 HDU beds, 15 beds for Neuro Rehabilitation and a 10 bed paediatric neurosurgical ward situated within the Variety Club Children's Hospital. 6 Level III beds are available in the SITU. Adult outpatient clinics are conducted in The Golden Jubilee Wing, paediatric clinics in dedicated facilities within the Variety Children's Club Hospital. Housed within the Neurosurgical Unit is a 5 bed telemetry unit, which is used by Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neuropsychiatry.
Main duties of the job
The appointees will offer 24h cover over Neuro HDU (Kinnier Wilson) and Neurosurgery (Murray Falconer). There is continuous support by the neurointensive care consultants throughout the working week and by the neuroanaesthetists during the weekends. Two formal ward rounds are performed daily. The appointees will also be expected to assist in the Anaesthetic Pre-assessment Clinic of the neurosurgical department, which runs daily. The clinical duties of the posts will be the day to day care of patients admitted to the neurosurgical department including admission, clinical examination, co-ordination of investigation, liaison with senior colleagues and pre-assessment of elective neurosurgical patients. JCFs will be rostered to attend neurosurgical operating theatres and teaching clinics on a regular basis. There is a robust program of educational supervision and a teaching program aimed specifically at the ST1-3 level trainees and non-training grade post holders are expected to take a full part.

Trust grade doctors have the same educational and training opportunities as training grade doctors however this post is not recognized for training purposes.
