Job summary
The Anaesthetic department at Kings is delighted to advertise this post to start from Spring 2023 for a period of 6-12 months. Standard hours of duty will be 40 per week plus additional out-of-hours commitments.
This combined post is aimed primarily at senior anaesthetic trainees, or qualified anaesthetists wishing to gain experience in anaesthesia for liver transplantation as well as further experience in cardiac anaesthesia.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties relating to liver transplantation include involvement in pre-operative assessment of patients prior to listing, anaesthesia for liver transplantation, hepato-biliary surgery and imaging procedures. Trainees are also expected to help with airway management and transfers for imaging of patients in the ICU. On call duties will be for the liver transplant theatre.
Clinical duties relating to cardiac anaesthesia include pre-operative assessment of elective and emergency patients, anaesthesia for cardiac surgery including TAVI, attendance at MDMs and involvement in post-operative care. The post-holder will not be required to provide out of hours cover for cardiac anaesthesia.

Many complex cases are now carried out in the catheter laboratory and about 200 TAVIs are carried out per year. The post holder will be expected to work mainly in cardiac theatres, with consultants, during the day time. There would be opportunities for training in anaesthesia for most aspects of cardiac (excluding transplantation), for example TOE, TAVI and thoracic aortic work. There would also be potential for involvement in research and audit projects already in progress.
