Job summary
An exciting opportunity exists to join a Junior Surgical Fellowship programme in our teaching Hospital Trust. The successful candidates will rotate through 4 monthly placements in 3 of the following specialties: Trauma & Emergency General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI surgery and Trauma & Orthopaedics. The rotations through these specialties will give wide exposure to all aspects of elective and emergency General Surgery and Orthopaedics. The successful applicants will form a team of junior clinical fellows to cover the workload of a busy Trauma Centre, and Colorectal and Upper GI tertiary referral services of a DGH hospital. In addition all post-holders will be expected to participate on a 1 in 12 Rota for covering day and night time wards and theatres, for General Surgical patients at Denmark Hill. Post-holders will be mainly based at Denmark Hill campus but will also be expected to work at the Princess Royal University Hospital campus in Orpington as needed for elective work. This post is not recognised by the Deanery for training. It is however F3/CT1/CT2 equivalent and it is a good preparatory period before applying for Core or Specialty training, and many previous Fellows have successfully entered training programmes from this post.
All candidates must be registered with the General Medical Council.The successful candidates would be expected to start in June 2023. There is also potential for an August 2023 start date.
Main duties of the job
Candidates will be supported to gain in-house experience in basic and intermediate surgical skills in clinical scenarios. There is exposure to major gastrointestinal cases, advanced laparoscopic cases, Trauma and emergency surgery. There is opportunity to perform audits, participate with scientific work and present in national and international conferences. Also there are opportunities to publish in peer review journals. Fellows will receive guidance and support in applying for HEE training programmes in the future.

The Junior Clinical Fellow post is primarily a clinical post rotating through the different General Surgical Specialties and Orthopaedics. The rotations are of 4 months duration and reflect a similar structure as Core Surgical training 1 and 2 rotations. We will be seeking to place candidates with priority to sub-specialties according to their specialist interest and requirements of their personal portfolio in order to maximise their career development. At least one rotation will be in Orthopaedics.
The post holders spend most of their time on the wards, in clinics and in theatres. Note that this may be both on the Denmark Hill and Princess Royal University Hospital sites as the consultants and their teams operate on both sites. The positions are for 12 months initially, but it will be possible to extend a contract depending on satisfactory progress and mutual agreement with a view to a CT2 type rotation in the 2nd 12 months.
The clinical component of the posts is to provide on-call cover in conjunction with the JCF On-call rota. This is currently on a full shift system.
The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
