Job summary
King's College Hospital is one of the largest and busiest in London, with a well-established national and international reputation for clinical excellence, innovation and achievement. King's College Hospital has been at the forefront of fertility treatment for more than 35 years. The assisted conception unit has been in existence since 1983 and provides a full range of investigations and treatment for infertility in dedicated premises. As of the 1st of November 2017, the fertility services were transferred to King's Fertility, a partnership between the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) and King's College Hospital. Last year the unit performed approximately 1000 cycles of IVF/ICSI. Currently 70% of cycles are funded through NHS contracts and 30% are self-funded.
Main duties of the job
Understand the implications of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFEA) Act 1990 and practise according to the Code of Practice produced by the HFEA
See patients in new patient and follow up clinics to counsel them and plan their management
Counsel patients who require assisted conception about all aspects of their treatment, risks and complications of treatment and legal and ethical issues relating to their treatment
Undertake all clinical aspects of assisted conception including scheduling, transvaginal ultrasound, egg collection, embryo transfer, intrauterine insemination, pregnancy scanning and management of pregnancy/ treatment related complications

Manage any assisted conception patients admitted to the gynaecology ward
Keep senior colleagues informed of patients and any problems and seek help or advice where appropriate
Attend weekly departmental clinical/audit meetings
Take part in the rota to cover clinical activities at Kings Fertility on Saturday and Sunday mornings, along with Bank Holidays, as well as holding the emergency out-of-hours phone for Kings Fertility on a rota basis (1:3 1:5)
The post is suitable for doctors who have completed at least two years at Registrar grade or equivalent in obstetrics and gynaecology, who wish to gain practical experience in clinical assisted conception and reproductive endocrinology, become proficient in transvaginal ultrasonography, egg collections and embryo transfer. The post holder will be required to take part in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology rota on a 1:10 basis. The post is offered on a 1-year contract, potentially with an option to extend for a further year. The post holder will receive training in duties of the post as necessary.
