Job summary
We are seeking for an experienced and highly motivated Registered Nurse/OPD to join the Vascular Access (CNS) Team. You will have a key role in setting the standards and contribute to improving IV care for both in-patients and out-patients cross site. We are looking for individuals who are well organised, able to use their initiative and can challenge poor practice. You will support the Lead VA CNS in promoting King's values at the PRUH & South Sites. Although this post is PRUH based, you will be expected to work cross site (Denmark Hill) when required. You will be working under the direction of the Lead VA CNS. You will ensure that high standards of care are delivered in relation to vascular access within the Trust by implementing an overall strategy of evidence-based practice and education programmes. The post holder will also undertake regular audits to assess the impact of educational interventions. The successful applicant must therefore be highly motivated, show a sound clinical grounding, enthusiastic, have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to support and educate others coupled with experience in people and financial management. An excellent working knowledge of infection control and vascular access device management is essential.

Job Description
- To create and maintain a safe therapeutic clinical environment for all patients who receive intravascular support therapy via an IV device
- To provide clinical leadership and expertise within scope of responsibility
- With support of the Lead Vascular Access CNS, to develop and coordinate a support service that assesses and benchmark clinical practice to ensure high standards of care are given in relation to intravascular access practice in accordance with Trust policy and national best practice standards
- To provide best practice advice in clinical settings and act as expert resource for all members of the multi-disciplinary teams throughout KCH in relation to intravascular access in accordance with clinical governance
- With the support of Lead Vascular Access CNS, to provide, as part of nurse led vascular access devise placement team who will insert medium/long-term intravenous devices including but not limited to Midlines and Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters (PICC)
- To deliver educational and practice development programmes for practitioners to ensure the delivery of the highest standards of care in relation to intravascular support therapy and patient care
- To review and coordinate, or where necessary establish appropriate training is in place for all healthcare professionals involved in vascular access management
- To provide specialist support to nurses, healthcare professionals, other trust staff, patients, their families/careers in relation to vascular access management
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- CLINICAL PRACTICE
- In the context of the Academic Health Sciences Centre, working in partnership to standardise protocols and procedures across the Trusts
- Insert medium/ long-term intravenous devices including but not limited to midlines and PICCs.
- Develop knowledge and practice in an area of work regarding IV access, insertion and management. This will include the use of specialist equipment (e.g. ultrasound, ECG guidance) and interpretation of CXR in relation to tip location
- Maintain sound knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control, to reduce risks of IV device related bacteraemia
- Provide and supervise ongoing care and education of midlines and PICC lines
- Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs in relation to IV management and access.
- To participate in the development of research based practices. To assess, plan and with clinical teams, implement, evaluate and improve standards of care within the sphere of responsibility.
- To advise clinical areas in respect of care and standardisation of intravascular equipment, having due regard for both safety and financial constraints. To ensure any deficiencies are communicated to appropriate personnel and when necessary to the Infection Control Committees.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/ relatives, and professional across health and social services
- In conjunction with other specialist clinical staff, undertake monitoring and evaluation of standards of care of patients.
