Job summary
This is a new post which will combine clinical, managerial, educational and audit skills to meet the needs of patients with rectal evacuatory disorders. This post will assist patients, their families and carers to improve their health outcomes and promote their health and wellbeing. The post holder will demonstrate expert, patient centred care, delivered with compassion and competence that is culturally sensitive, evidence based and promotes independence.
Main duties of the job
In collaboration with the colorectal surgical team and wider MDT the post holder will care for patients who need assessment and management of rectal evacuatory disorders in the outpatient setting in order to
- Be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality, expert, evidence based care for a caseload of patients with faecal incontinence and obstructive defaecation
- Function as a competent clinical practitioner and professional role model in the conservative management of these conditions
- Function as a patient advocate enabling informed choices through assessment, interpretation of test results and management strategies such as exercise, medication, irrigation and peripheral nerve stimulation

- To provide and manage an expert nursing service for patients with rectal evacuatory disorders in collaboration with medical colleagues
- To provide and manage an expert nursing service for patients following low rectal resection and/or treatment of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) in collaboration with medical colleagues
- To provide and manage an expert nursing service for the assessment of patients undergoing low rectal resection and restorative proctocolectomy in collaboration with medical colleagues
- To manage care from nursing assessment to conservative management implementation to evaluation
- To make and receive internal referrals to promote seamless pathways of care and liaise with community colleagues to maintain clear lines of communication
- To carry out diagnostic tests such as anorectal manometry and 3D US with consultant support
- Develop a nurse led clinic
- To run an outpatient PTNS service when clinically competent
- To manage a dynamic caseload, ensuring patients have an accurate plan of care that reflects the assessment and incorporates relevant issues, recommendations and onward plans with clear documentation in the patient records
- Act as a collaborative change agent, using evidence to guide development and service improvement
- Be competent to discuss complex treatment options, giving clear, appropriate information that is easily understood in a range of formats and resources
- Act and an expert resource for members of the wider MDT and colleagues across settings and organisational boundaries
- To participate in the monthly Pelvic Floor MDT and present patients where necessary
- Demonstrate the ability to involve patients in providing feedback for the purposes of service improvement
- To build links with existing services such as gastroenterology and urogynaecology to promote shared opportunities for working across organisational boundaries
