Static Band 6 Physiotherapist - Acute medicine

Maternity cover - 1 year fixed term contact

Princess Royal University Hospital, Kent as part of Kings College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic band 6 Physiotherapist to join the acute medicine team. Applicants should have wide ranging clinical experience, good communication and interpersonal skills, and a passion for delivering high quality patient centred care, with a specific interest in acute medicine. This post would suit either someone wishing to further those skills at a senior level, or someone looking to develop leadership skills prior to specialising in a lead role.

The post holder should also be keen to teach and develop others.

The post holder will work alongside the Clinical Lead, 2 Team Leads, band 6 and band 5 physiotherapists to cover the following areas:

  • Accident and emergency
  • Clinical Decision unit
  • 56 bedded acute medical unit
  • 28 bedded acute medicine ward

Please note that this post operates a 7 day working pattern and the successful candidate will be required to work 2 weekends per month

Main duties of the job

The post holder will independently manage a clinical caseload within the inpatient multi-disciplinary speciality teams. They will supervise and support band 5 members of staff. There is a strong emphasis on student education in all clinical teams and a variety of models, with support from senior clinical leads.

There is a well-established in service education programme, where you can build upon your clinical skills, and develop managerial skills with support from senior clinical leads. The post holder will also contribute to the in house training and development programme.

Attendance at post registration courses is also supported.

Candidates will be expected to join and partake in our overnight emergency on-call rota, so previous experience of working on an on-call rota or working within respiratory / intensive care field is essential. You will also be expected to work as part of a seven day rota.

We are looking for someone ready to progress professionally to a static in-patient Band 6 role in acute medicine, or to further develop their leadership Band 6 skills. Candidates should have experience of working within acute medicine, The post is based at the Princess Royal University Hospital in the London borough of Bromley, as part of the wider King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCLINICAL AND PROFESSIONALPatient Care To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including management of clinical risk, knowledge of indications and precautions of chosen techniques in line with national and trust clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist. To receive referrals, undertake full assessment and independently plan individual specialized treatment programmes for patients appropriately depending on the physiotherapists diagnosis, using clinical reasoning and specialist skills such as use of respiratory adjuncts, patient education, exercise and advanced airway clearance techniques. To carry a designated clinical caseload including complex patients and prioritise that work efficiently taking into account clinical and service priorities using specialist knowledge to underpin decisions. To use recognised outcome measures to evaluate the effect of the physiotherapy interventions and ensure the treatment programmes are progressing appropriately.

To provide individual patient equipment as required, such as, walking aids, splints and supports. To issue such equipment with due regard to safety of the equipment, and in line with legal, national and local guidelines

Advise, guide and teach junior staff and students in the assessment and management of patients and other aspects of clinical practice. To be responsible for the standard of physiotherapy carried out by physiotherapy assistants or technical instructors working with you. To undertake home visits when appropriate, to ensure planned discharge from hospital. When required, run group/class work and community fitness programmes, working without direct supervision, including management of the waiting list. The post holder will be expected to work on any of the Kings College Hospital sites as required and in any working pattern as required by the service e.g., 7 day working Rotas, extended hours, oncalls and weekend duty rotas, cover of statutory and public holidays.
