Job summary

To provide clinical special care dentistry to a wide range of individuals who meet the referral criteria for the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry; Provide local leadership to the clinic team and perform to the expected competency level of a Band B dentist.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the provision of high quality oral health care to patients, both adults and children, in need of special dental care including the provision of domiciliary dental services.

The location of the clinical duties may be varied according to the needs of the service.

To keep accurate and clear contemporaneous written records on each patient outlining the clinical treatment performed and any advice given.

To work in collaboration with the oral health promotion team when required and to advise educational, health and social care staff within the locality on Community Special Care Dentistry and oral health issues.

To supervise, instruct and support administrative team, junior dentists and dental care professionals in their clinical duties whilst providing clinical care.

To be responsible for supervising the dental nurse and to ensure that they perform the necessary duties in the dental surgery with regard to infection control and decontamination following the Infection Control Policy of the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry.

  • Registerable dental qualification
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council
  • Registered postgraduate qualification, specialist registration on specialist list for special care dentistry or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • 5 years or more post qualified
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate clinical experience in delivering special care dentistry at Band B complexity level.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical experience in the provision of domiciliary care
  • Supporting or teaching colleagues
  • Participation in clinical audit
  • Experience of treating patients under inhalation sedation

Desirable

  • Supervision of clinical staff
  • Experience of treating patients under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation
