Charles Polkey Ward is a 23 bedded unit that takes not only takes emergency and elective neurology patients but also looks after patients undergoing neurosurgery with a wide range of neurological conditions.

Main duties of the job

This post is looking for someone dynamic, enthusiastic with a passion for education to enhance staff development to come join our senior nursing team where you will be supported and guided by the ward manager and the current band 6 team. The post holder will assist the Neurosciences division in providing an opportunistic environment for learning within the clinical area for all grades of nursing staff and allied health professionals and subsequently supporting this learning in practice. In addition you will be expected to partake in a clinical role as a band 6 nursing team leader taking charge of shifts, mentoring of junior staff and students and experiencing some of the managerial aspects of nursing with support from the ward manager like roster creation, sickness management and conduction of appraisals with your own cohort of nurses.

An appropriate post registration qualification and previous experience of leading a team is desirable but not essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is a relevant teaching qualification or equivalent experience.

This would be a great opportunity for someone with a passion for neurosciences who wishes to experience both the medical and surgical aspects of neuro and is looking to progress in their career and further contribute to the active learning of the team on Charles Polkey.

  1. Clinical Practice
  • To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and the 6 Cs in action, alongside the Kings values.

  1. Education and Research
  • To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all nursing staff within the department, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments.
  • To develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes and opportunities for all nursing staff, with the Practice Development team.
  • To advise in relation to educational opportunities and assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives.
  • To assist the Trust's Drug Programme Co-ordinator in helping Registered Nurses achieve level 1 competency in the King's College Hospital NHS Trust's Administration of Medicines Training Programme.
  • To support nursing staff in developing clinical competency using the relevant core and clinical competency documents as a framework. To monitor use and completion of these to an agreed level, in accordance with ward requirement
  • To assist in the evaluation of learning contracts and objectives for nursing staff for whom there is a capability issue.
  • To create, sustain and support an environment where practice development and change can flourish.
  • To support appropriate mentors and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised.
  • To promote research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area. To keep the Assistant Director of Nursing (Education and Research) informed of any new nursing research proposals, and on the progress of research studies approved by the Trust R&D and Ethics Committees.
  • To work closely with HEI staff and the Assistant Director of Nursing (Education and Research) in contributing to the development and review of speciality-related nursing courses, and in the evaluation of relevant courses in order to help inform Education Commissioning.
