Full time Specialist Dental Nurse 37.5 hours a week

The Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry and Oral Medicine, based at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent, is offering an exciting opportunity for one full time Qualified Specialist Dental Nurse to join its busy nursing team.
You must be able to prepare, organise and maintain highest standards of nursing care in the clinical environment for Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry and Oral Medicine in collaboration with the clinical teams.
Candidates must hold a Certificate in Dental Nursing Level 3 and I.V Sedation. They preferably should have experience of nursing oral surgery, orthodontic and restorative patients. Registration with the GDC is Essential.

Main duties of the job
- Provide a high level of dental nursing care for all patients; including anxious patients. Explain dental procedures/treatment to patients.
- Act as a second appropriately trained person to monitor the clinical condition of the patient throughout and after treatment under conscious IV and inhalation sedation.
To contribute to health and safety and infection prevention and lead by example when working with trainee members of staff.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Dental Nursing Duties
- Carrying out clinical duties in all areas.
- Preparing dental instruments, materials and equipment for each clinical session
- Receiving and preparing patients for treatment in the clinic under the direction of the clinician.
- Assisting dental staff in the full range of dental treatment and procedures, ensuring that relevant information about the patient, including any change in his/her condition, is reported to the dentist.
- Follow the LOCCIP guidelines and checks.
- Where appropriate, assisting with patients receiving treatment under relative analgesia, inhalation sedation or IV sedation. Providing pre and postoperative care.
- Being responsible for the needs of the qualified dental nurses and agency staff working in your base dental clinic. Teaching, training supervising and assisting them with any issues they are unsure about.
- Re-assuring and informing the patient about further treatment and assist with arranging appointments.
- Working with undergraduate dental students working in the clinics.
- Supervising student dental nurses on their placement in our clinics.
- To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas of the Department and other associated clinical areas within the Trust.
- Adhering to the departments Infection Control Policy and Blood Borne Virus policy when treating all patients.
- Management of clinical waste, dealing appropriately and safely with hazardous or toxic waste materials.
- Being aware of language and cultural difficulties and dealing with these in a sensitive and appropriate manner.
- In the absence of a dentist reporting any problems or deficiencies to senior dental nurse.
- Carry out pre-operative procedures prior to treatment under conscious sedation.
- To ensure the smooth running of the sedation clinics.
- To ensure that any incidents or occurrences are reported appropriately.
- To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all staff within the oral surgery department.
- Checking patients' fitness for discharge after sedation and providing post-operative information verbally and in writing.
- Dealing with complaints in the appropriate manner and trying to prevent them from occurring in the first instant.
- Assisting the Dental Nurse Manager
- Assisting with the weekly dental nurse rota as and when required.
- Advising new staff of the infection control policy and which precautions to take.
- Being aware of current trends and changes in Health and Safety. Ensuring clinics adhere to the regulations and follow guidelines.
- Any other duties at the discretion of line manager.
