Job summary
The paediatric neurosurgical unit has much to offer a highly motivated senior trainee with an interest in paediatric neurosurgery as a sub-specialty. We have one of the highest numbers of paediatric brain and spine tumour patients and an excellent teenage and young adult service ensuring seamless transition. We are at the forefront of surgical technology and innovation with considerable experience in applying this to our diverse practice. Intra-operative tumour fluorescence is increasingly used at King's in the paediatric population, as is neuro-monitoring, intra-operative ultrasound, neuro-navigation and the minimally invasive approach (including intra-ventricular and skull base). We have some of the largest series in the UK of implantation of paediatric deep brain stimulators, endoscopic trans-sphenoidal approach to craniopharyngiomas, advanced neuro-endoscopy for resection of intraventricular tumours, 5-ALA use in the paediatric population and encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis for moyamoya.
Main duties of the job
The fellow may participate in the general neurosurgical rota (Tier 2) on a 1 in 6 basis. They will also be encouraged to share responsibility for the paediatric neurosurgical patients outside of strict rota commitments.
