Job summary
The busy paediatric neurology department at King's College Hospital (KCH) offers inpatient and outpatient services to the local community and region, and supports specialist services including PICU, NICU, paediatric hepatology, paediatric major trauma and the paediatric neurosurgical service for South Thames East. The department comprises three full time and three part time paediatric neurologists, and a full time consultant in paediatric neuro-rehabilitation and epilepsy. The department works in partnership with paediatric neurology colleagues at the Evelina London Children's Hospital (ELCH), who provide out of hours cover to our inpatients. The post-holder will offer general paediatric and neurology support to inpatients and outpatients, including contributing to the 1:4 consultant of the week (CoW) rota at KCH, and help support the busy children's epilepsy service. The post-holder will also contribute on a 1:16 basis to the CoW on call rota for paediatric neurology for the South Thames East Region, based at ELCH. Areas of special interest can be developed in keeping with the needs of the department.
Main duties of the job
At Kings, the post holder will:
- Attend at Kings College Hospital 5 days per week
- Provide a weekly outpatient epilepsy clinic
- Provide a weekly general paediatric neurology clinic, for ward follow-up and new outpatient referrals, with opportunity to develop special interest clinics
- Support paediatric colleagues in development and continuation of dedicated clinics for children newly presenting with paroxysmal events including epileptic seizures, neurodisability, acquired brain injury and brain tumours
- Participate in the 1 in 4 Consultant of the Week rota to the paediatric neurology and neurosurgery inpatients, both on Lion ward and elsewhere within child health.
- Provide a ward consult service to support neurosurgical colleagues and other paediatric disciplines in the management of complex children with neurological disorders/symptoms, including NICU, paediatric hepatology, general paediatrics, paediatric haematology, paediatric surgery and trauma, and PICU.
- Provide advice to colleagues and families by phone and email as appropriate
- Supervise the Specialist Trainees and Clinical Fellows including providing lectures, tutorials and seminars as required alongside other colleagues

- Together with the other members of the paediatric neurosciences team, to provide a clinical service for Paediatric Neurology on the Kings College Hospital site. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
- Be responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Be responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.
- Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
