Job summary

Following significant investment to transform the delivery of King's College Hospital Ophthalmology, we are looking for a highly motivated, experienced orthoptist to lead and develop our community and vision screening support service.The successful applicant will join our friendly, forward thinking team of 4 advanced clinical practitioners, 8 orthoptists, 6 optometrists and a large group of Ophthalmologists. The post will be based at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.You will need expert clinical orthoptic skills to manage a wide and complex caseload, including patients attending the eye casualty service and will contribute to the training of ophthalmologists, optometrists and medical students.The post will interest those who are keen to develop their leadership skills by training and supporting a group of community vision screeners across Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich, and managing the onward pathway into the HES. The post holder will be responsible for auditing the screening programme and feeding results back to BIOS.Opportunities for development in extended roles is available within the department, training and support will be available using the OPT framework.A current driving license and access to a car would be beneficial.The ophthalmology service is operational over a 7-day week, and successful candidates may be expected to work flexibly at other Kings College Hospital NHS Trust locations.

Main duties of the job

  • To be primary contact and to act as a source of orthoptic expertise within primary care.
  • To develop and provide a comprehensive teaching package to primary care practitioners/vision screeners to enable them to carry out effective primary vision screening
  • To continually audit the vision screening service.

  • To ensure, individually and as part of the team, the effective and efficient running of the orthoptic and ophthalmology service.
  • to work as an autonomous practitioner in a single-handed capacity without supervision.
  • To provide line management for more junior staff

To undertake detailed orthoptic assessmentsin highly specialist clinics ; e.g

  • Neurology/ stroke rehab.
  • Complex ocular motility, including thyroid and max fax.
  • Botulinum toxin
