Liver Intensive Care Unit
10 full time or split job liver critical care consultants cover the Unit 24/7, providing 3 x day ward rounds andsupervision of all admissions / discharges and management decisions.The LITU consultant body are: Professor Julia Wendon; Professor Georg Auzinger; Professor William Bernal; Dr Christopher Willars; Dr Robert Loveridge; Dr Sameer Patel; Dr Tasneem Pirani (Clinical Lead); Dr MarkMcPhail; Dr Stacey Calvert; Dr Pervez Khan.The rota providing cover to the Liver ITU is provided by 16 doctors, mostly at registrar level. Night-time cover is provided by 2 doctors, one of whom being airway trained.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will be involved in fixed clinical commitments which would be determined by both their clinical training needs and the service requirements of the Liver Intensive Care Unit. The post holder will beexpected to participate in the on-call rota on a flexible basis in accordance with the European Working time directive, and local trust policy.The doctor undertaking the fellowship will be scheduled to undertake non-clinical, management and research aspects of the post through dedicated rostering. There will be an expectation that the doctor will also beresponsible for departmental Journal club organization and scheduling.

Advanced liver CC training opportunities:
- Develop critical care management skills (generic) team management, audit, risk and governance, communication, finances, M&M processes, MDT and Inter-professional communication skills.
- Generic and liver specific skills: bronchoscopy / endoscopy (if appropriate to baseline skills), critical care echocardiography (FICE), ultrasound, CT / MR imaging interpretation.
- Prognostic modeling in liver CC.
- Management of acute liver failure (incorporating management of cerebral oedema and raised intra cranial hypertension), alcoholic hepatitis, liver trauma, liver transplant (immediate).
- Management of critically ill patients with cirrhosis: Variceal bleeding, renal failure, ARDS, ascites, encephalopathy.
- Management of the immunosuppressed patient.Exposure to see patients with ECMO, which is a Consultant Lead service.
- Handling referrals / advice and decision-making.
- Transfer advice and remote clinical decision-making.
- Role of the Intensivist in assessment of the transplant recipient.
- Management and assessment of living donor recipient and donor.
- Management of hepatopulmonary syndrome and porto-pulmonary HTN (RHC diagnostics).
- Management of complex pancreatitis with multiple organ failure.
