Job summary

The aim of this post is to provide resident cover to the adult critical care service at the Denmark Hill site of King's College Hospital (KCH-DH). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience of working in a large tertiary critical care department under the mentorship of consultants with a range of tertiary hospital sub-specialist interests (including, but not limited to: major trauma; neurology and neurosurgery; cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery; haematology including haemoncology).

Main duties of the job

Clinical Fellow / Resident

The successful applicants will be assigned to one of 6 critical care units at KCH-DH, where they will work as part of the team of 9 resident doctors. The residents are responsible for the day-to-day management of patients on the critical care unit, under the supervision of a consultant intensivist.

On call structure

Each unit has at least two on-call resident doctors during the day and one overnight. The critical care units are supported by a team of senior clinical fellows (SCF) and advanced critical care practitioners (ACCP) as well as the unit's on-call consultant.

Education

The appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named educational supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post-foundation doctors. These posts are aligned with the training requirements of ACCS, Anaesthetics and IMT trainees.

Kings College Hospital NHS Trust has one of the busiest critical care services in the UK with currently 7 adult intensive care units over two sites (Denmark Hill and Princess Royal University Hospital) receiving approximately 4000 admissions per year, with 2000 of these admissions to the general critical care units. Critical Care at Kings is already one of the largest in the country and an ongoing plan of expansion will make it the biggest in the UK with more than 100 Critical Care beds, supported by state-of-the-art design, technology and information systems.

The critical care department at Kings College Hospital has an international reputation for clinical excellence and a prominent research profile. The hospital not only serves a diverse, multi-ethnic local population but operates as one of the four major trauma centres within the capital, a major trauma centre for Kent and as a tertiary services centre for neuroscience (including neurology, stroke and neurosurgery), haematological oncology, cardiac / cardio-thoracic (including primary PCI), cystic fibrosis, and hepatobiliary (including transplantation) patients. As a result, Kings critical care has an unrivalled patient population in terms of clinical diversity and complexity.

Critical Care Units at Kings provide all modalities of multi-organ support and monitoring. Services are provided by dedicated teams utilising the most up-to-date clinical practices including a 24/7 V-A ECMO service. The department consists of a multi-professional team including medical, nursing, pharmacy, dietetics and therapy staff, with audit, risk, project and technical support, research personnel, as well as rehabilitation, social services, administrative and follow-up clinic staff.

The department is recognized for all stages of critical care training by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM). There is an active and varied educational programme with which all doctors are expected to participate. This includes weekly teaching sessions mapped to the FICM curriculum, journal club, M&M meetings and departmental research and audit meetings. In addition there are other educational opportunities including simulation based training.

CCU-A: 15 beds CCU-B: 14 beds Liver ITU: 19 beds (specialist liver service)

Princess Royal University Hospital: 12 beds (separate site approximately 12 miles from the main site)
