Locum Consultant in Colorectal with an Interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease/Pelvic Floor Disorders
There is an opportunity to join a great team at one of the leading teaching hospitals in the country, King's College Hospital. The Colorectal unit has been fully laparoscopic for over a decade, early adopters of transanal surgery and endoscopic submucosal dissection, with integrated laparoscopic theatres. King's College Hospital is a busy tertiary referral hospital offering emergency and trauma care and the post holder will be required to participate in the emergency surgery rota.
The colorectal group of consultants offer all aspects of subspecialty care including colorectal cancer, pelvic floor, inflammatory bowel disease and early colorectal cancer. This post requires the candidate to join the department to offer their support for these services and in particular be part of the team delivering inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor services
This post will have a 10 PA job plan.

Main duties of the job
The post is a locum consultant position that is flexible to allow for the reconfiguration of colorectal services.
The post holder will be encouraged to work closely with our gastroenterology service to develop a robust and effective service to support patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Additionally, the post holder will be encouraged to develop/participate in other benign colorectal conditions, such as day surgery and endoscopy.Our pelvic floor laboratory is equipped with anophysiology and 3D Endo US equipment, which the post holder will have to co-manage, develop services and run with a pelvic floor nurse.
In his/her role, the post holder will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team providing and developing emergency, general and colorectal care, as well as assisting in the development of surgery for inflammatory bowel disease at King's.
This post will be based primarily at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill site, although clinical and elective duties will also be required at Princes Royal Hospital, particularly for main theatres, as services and collaborations expand.
In addition, the individual will be required to contribute actively to the general workload of the department as well as to teaching and training junior staff members.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ELECTIVE Colorectal Surgery
1. Together with the other consultant surgeons to provide a service for general surgery patients, particularly colorectal surgery. This includes all aspects of benign lower GI work including emergency colorectal cancer and benign surgery and general surgery as needed, clinical work up and post-operative care provision. This post will primarily focus on the development of surgical services for inflammatory bowel diseases and pelvic floor work.
2. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
3. The post holder is expected to attend weekly colorectal MDT meetings, Trauma and governance meetings, and share in and support the academic and organisational activities of the Clinical Academic Group (CAG) across Kings Health Partners.
4. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
5. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
6. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the Divisional management team.
7. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
8. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
9. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
10. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
11. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
12. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
13. To undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director.
14. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
15. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
16. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety
