Job summary

The Princess Royal University Hospital is inviting applications for an enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow, to join us on a permanent basis. The post will be 40 hours, plus out of hours commitment.

This appointment will provide anaesthesia and preoperative care for patients undergoing a wide variety of elective and emergency surgeries at the Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital and Queen Mary, Sidcup. This post would be ideal for any doctor looking for a senior fellowship, or a post CCT Fellow looking for further specialist and experience.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will be responsible for providing daytime anaesthesia and preoperative care for patients undergoing both elective and emergency surgery. You will also provide support to the resident on call rotas covering either general emergencies or labour ward. Although not a training post, the successful applicant would be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the department and hospital.

Job responsibilities

The Department of Anaesthesia provides perioperative care for patients undergoing a wide variety of both elective and emergency surgeries and consists of 29 Consultants, 6 associate specialists 12 CT and SPR anaesthetists on a rotational training programme within the South Thames Deanery, and 16 SCF, JCF and Speciality Doctors. The department has a number of lead clinicians providing overview for all areas of care. The Department of Anaesthesia comes under the STAE Care Group (Surgery, Theatres, Anaesthesia & pain, and Endoscopy), and works closely with the Service Manager, Ms Sharmain Ali, the Care Group Clinical Director, Dr Angela Orunta, the Care Group General Manager, Ms Jane Ely, and the Medical Director at the PRUH, Mr Frank Smedley.

Dr Claire Botfield is the Anaesthesia site clinical lead at the PRUH and Dr Rachel Addison is the College Tutor.

The Princess Royal has six main theatres and six day case theatres (with a 23 hour stay potential), and provides perioperative care for general surgery, urology, gynaecology, ENT, breast, orthopaedics and trauma, ophthalmology and bariatric surgery. A further two theatres are dedicated to obstetric patients. A new Endoscopy building is currently under construction and will house two theatres for the provision of general anaesthesia for endoscopy procedures. A new Prehabililation Service provides care for cancer patients and those suffering with frailty undergoing surgery. The Orpington site provides an orthopaedic hub with a current throughput of 2500 patients a year in three theatres for patients from both the Princess Royal and Kings College Hospital sites. A fourth module theatre is being set up there and should become operational early in 2022. Ophthalmic and max-fax surgery take place on the Queen Mary site, which is now also offering theatre time for ASA1&2 patients from the South East London Network (Kings, Guys, St Thomas, Lewisham and Greenwich).

The successful applicant will be part of a team providing anaesthetic support to the resident on call rotas in addition to day time elective work. There are 2 tiers to the rota: one covers general on call for theatres, the other to labour ward. Support to the critical care rota will cease in August 2022. Currently the rotas are run as an eight person rotating rota with 50% on call and 50% standard days.

The post would be suitable for any Doctor looking for a senior fellowship, or a post CCT Fellow looking for further specialist experience. We also have a proactive encouraging approach to doctors wishing to achieve CESR having successfully supported a number of colleagues through the process. Although this Senior Clinical Fellow post is not accredited for training, the appointee will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the Department and the Hospital. The appointee will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to undergo annual review and appraisal. Annual leave and Study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors.
