Job summary

The Department of ENT Surgery treats the large range of common ENT problems with audiology support on both main outpatient sites. There is surgical in-patient capacity and a dedicated large "23 hour" day surgery unit that allows operative delivery for the majority of procedures. ENT Outpatient clinics are held at the Princess Royal University Hospital and Beckenham Beacon.There are general and sub-speciality clinics. The post-holder will be expected to participate in the teaching programs of the department. The ENT department is undergoing transformational change. We are working in partnership with our local acute provider network to refine and streamline care across the South East London region. We are planning with the region to significantly expand the department from the historical cohort of three consultants and four middle grade doctors to a larger entity based at the Princess Royal University Hospital. We are seeking a self-motivated individual who can work well together to help provide a safe and comprehensive ENT service and can work with our other ENT surgeons and allied surgical and medical colleagues. We want a person who has the ability to flex changing working patters as we develop, has European accreditation (or equivalent) or a history of being able to work relatively independently but be part of a team. These are very important attributes.

Main duties of the job

The appointed Specialty Doctor will join a team that works collaboratively with other teams at the Princess Royal University Hospital. The service includes emergency and elective work, for both adults and children. The department has many areas of special interest.

The post holder will participate in and support the function of the department and will be working mostly in the PRUH Hospital where the emergency and elective procedures take place and most clinic activities occur but some clinic activities will be based at Beckenham Beacon,a local health centre. The post holder must be prepared to travel to all sites within the Trust as part of their duties, though almost exclusively, clinical work is based at PRUH and at Beckenham Beacon.

The ENT Service comprises of a team of three (increasing to four) Consultant Surgeons, a Specialty Doctor, two (increasing to three) Senior Clinical Fellows (Trust grade doctors) and a Specialist Registrar, appointed on the S.E Thames Regional rotation. There are usually four F2 level doctors supporting the service.

The post holder will participate in a 1:4 on-call rota moving to 1:5 with new appointments.

  1. CLINICAL ORGANISATION

As part of the management of surgical conditions within the Trust we have a full range of current radiological facilities with a dedicated interventional radiology service.

The successful candidate will form part of a team comprising three consultants (to be increased), four middle grade doctors (to be increased to five), one of which (this post) is a specialty doctor and another is a specialist registrar, appointed on the S.E Thames Regional rotation. There are four F2 level doctors generally. We have a dedicated clinical nurse specialist supporting the 2ww head and neck service.

ENT has an average of ten elective theatre sessions per week. Mostly in the dedicated six theatre DSU (which is a 23 hour unit), otherwise in the six theatre inpatient theatre complex. There is a daily CEPOD emergency list to provide support to all surgical specialities.

The team is led by the following consultants all of whom have a regular broad range of the common ENT presenting conditions as well as having complimentary sub-specialist interests:

Mr Shri Rao general ENT and head & neck surgery

Professor Rahul Kanegaonkar general ENT and otology

Newly appointed consultant General ENT and subspecialty

  1. CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

The postholder will be expected to contribute and participate in the departments ongoing clinical audit programme, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. The postholder also has a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

  1. STUDY AND ANNUAL LEAVE

The postholder will be expected to comply with the CME requirements of the relevant Royal College. Study leave may be requested in accordance with the Trusts Policy for Continuing Medical Education. Annual leave may be taken in accordance with the Trusts Guidelines on Leave Arrangements for Medical and Dental Staff. To ensure the smooth running of the service the postholder will ensure that, in conjunction with colleagues, adequate arrangements are made to cover planned absences.
