Main duties of the job
The post holder should have experience in managing lipid disorders and parenteral nutrition as well as laboratory medicine experience in blood sciences laboratory.
You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview.
The post will be based at King's College Hospital and deliver clinical services across DH and PRUH & South sites. The proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care and 2 Programmed Activities allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities (Programmed Activities will be inclusive of Trust and Viapath responsibilities). The On-Call commitment is for a 1 in 4 rota which is classed as Category B.
As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Job responsibilities
- Together with the leadership team*, to provide comprehensive clinical biochemistry service for all users (with a specific focus on Primary Care) of the Laboratory/Viapath Analytics. This includes all aspects including expert support for the diagnosis and management of clinical problems and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
- Shared responsibility with the other consultants and associate specialist for providing 24-hour, 7 day a week cover for the department/Viapath Analytics on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide a consultant clinical interpretative and advisory service for the range of biochemical tests offered by the biochemistry department/Viapath Analytics. The particular area is in relation to Primary Care laboratory assay services.
- Together with a team of Health Care Scientists support and direct specific developments in use of HPLC-MS/ MS technologies in Specialist Biochemistry/Viapath Analytics.
- Work with multi-disciplinary staff to provide a consultant-led clinical service to the Trust for:
- Lipid service
- Parental Nutrition
- To participate in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings and outpatient clinics.
- Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
- To contribute to departmental/Viapath research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&I framework.
- To contribute to the Audit Programme.
- To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
- To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for chemical pathology services.
- To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
- To undertake Division management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director of Pathology.
- To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
- To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
- To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
