Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional individual to join our Pathology Business Unit (PBU) as a General Manager. This senior position will work across both King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, to support the delivery a new and exciting partnership to transform Pathology services across South East London. This partnership will deliver and transform Pathology service across South East London, serving a population of around 1.7million and delivering a service for both primary and secondary care providers.
This programme will deliver significant transformation of pathology services for South East London, through implementation of digital pathology and creation of a new clinically led target operating model with a new hub and essential services laboratories working on each site, working through unified and standardised pathways. This will provide improvements in service performance, outcomes, efficiency and position SEL at the forefront of R&D and Innovation, while delivering material savings for Trusts and a risk and gain share royalty, dependent on delivery of critical milestones.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that contracts are managed effectively, supporting the provision of a Pathology service in a senior operational role.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to build and maintain good working relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders on all matters to do with the contracting of pathology services.
- Be a local expert on the contracting of pathology services; integrating systems and managing effective working relationships with the appropriate stakeholders.
- Working closely with internal service users, being the point of contact for both the provider and those receiving services.
- Develop key working relationships with the senior managers from the pathology providers and internal and external service users including clinicians and commissioners. Ensure optimum engagement securing appropriate buy in, support and understanding.
- Link with other contracting leads who are part of the SEL Pathology contract, including (but not exclusively) SLaM, Oxleas and the CCGs to ensure that their interests are accounted for in the contract.
- Represent the Trusts interests in the negotiation of contract amendments with the pathology supplier.
- Supporting the Managing Director of the Pathology Business Unit to deliver the contract requirements and obligations, deputising and providing additional capacity to deliver as required

Operational Performance
- Analyse and interpret highly complex and diverse information on the performance of contracts, particularly identifying reasons for any deviations from plan and taking corrective action where necessary
- Fully understand the operational Viapath required key performance indicators for your sites regarding pathology tests by location, the Trust Service Agreement obligations and services via flow down contracts e.g. SLaM and Primary Care
- Be responsible for monitoring contracts and budgets for all customers of the Pathology contract, ensuring relevant information such as activity plans and profiles, finance, and quality targets to authorise payments for any over/under performance and feedback on a regular basis.
- To have comprehensive intelligence about the Trust sites you are responsible for including but not limited to, pathology pathways in services, activity levels, forecasting changing activity levels and impacts to the service provider Viapath to scale appropriately and responsively.
- To be involved and a key member of the General Managers and clinical management meetings of all services using pathology, demonstrating the relevance of the Pathology Business Unit as a critical resource for planning in patient care and effective service provision
- Develop short, medium and long-term objectives, which are turned into effective, affordable and achievable annual service plans and deliver these plans within the financial resources available
- Facilitate meetings with key providers in respect of contract monitoring and measurement; be responsible for reviewing the contract variation processes. To arrange and manage regular monitoring meetings and actions arising from analysis of monitoring reports to ensure contracts are delivering service priorities.
- Ensure systematic analysis of the key risks that may affect service users; quantify these; identify control systems to mitigate these risks and set action plans in place as appropriate.
- Support complex value for money assessments of proposed contract variations and develop business cases as required
- To investigate, resolve and make changes where necessary when problems arise from agreements (including complaints), negotiating directly with relevant parties and managing in year amendments to agreements as appropriate.
- Promote a data-driven service improvement culture, leading by example and continually encouraging all members of the Pathology Business Unit to identify improvements to safety, quality and efficiency of the provision of patient care
- Creating a collaborative environment with the Pathology provider to implement and deliver on continuous improvement programmes, using innovative and world-leading approaches.
