Job summary

Minimally invasive surgery has been in existence since the 1980's. Unfortunately, very little has been done in UK with respect to formalizing a fellowship training program which lays out the essential components and requirements for adequate training in this area of expertise.

The Senior Clinical Fellow position will train one person each academic year. The objective will be to train individuals who are dedicated to a future practice in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and hence broaden the base of teachers in MIS. This post will give the Fellow a large exposure to advanced laparoscopic procedures in the management of hepatobiliary, Bariatric, and upper GI diseases.

The consultant surgeon who are involved in the training program in MIS is also responsible for the training of general surgical Junior Clinical Fellows. There should be no conflict between these two levels of trainees.

Main duties of the job

One year training programme; one year contract renewable each year subject to mutual agreement. The overall objective of the Program is to train individuals who will be specialists in the field of Minimally Invasive HPB and UGI Surgery. It is essential that the fellow have previous experience at a reasonably senior level to allow him/ her to take advantage of the training opportunities available in the unit, and also to ensure that he/ she will be able to manage a busy unit with complex upper GI and hepatobiliary problems and high morbidity patients eg Bariatric.
