Job responsibilities
This is a replacement Consultant post. The post holder will have significant involvement in the delivery of paediatric/neonatal anaesthesia both during daytime cover and as part of the paediatric consultant on-call rota. The department covers most anaesthesia specialities, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.
It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.
The remit of the post holder will be to work flexibly within the multidisciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients requiring anaesthesia. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Anaesthetic Department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
Paediatric anaesthesia at King's College Hospital
The paediatric anaesthetic group at Kings is a close group of supportive colleagues who strive for the best care for their patients. There is frequent collaborative working, and active involvement in local governance, local and national audit and research.
The paediatric anaesthetists support a wide range of paediatric surgical and diagnostic services at Denmark Hill. These reflect our supra-regional specialities e.g. paediatric liver transplantation and hepatobiliary work, together with the regional sub-speciality of paediatric neurosurgery. Cases undertaken by the paediatric neurosurgical team include intracranial tumour resections, CSF shunt surgery, foramen magnum decompression, auditory brainstem implants and surgical management of epilepsy, The Harris Birth Right Trust is based at Kings College hospital and provides an antenatal diagnosis service, and hence this leads to a large volume of neonatal surgery being undertaken at the hospital and represents a significant percentage of the paediatric anaesthetic work at Kings.
We also provide anaesthesia for elective and urgent orthopaedic, maxillofacial, ophthalmology and general surgery. We run daily paediatric neuro imaging lists, thrice weekly paediatric liver biopsy lists, as well as endoscopy and day surgery units,. Since the designation of Kings as a major trauma centre we have also been involved in the treatment of paediatric major trauma. The paediatric anaesthetists also provide an acute pain service with a dedicated paediatric pain nurse and consultant cover. The paediatric anaesthetists run a paediatric pre-assessment service with appropriate nursing assistance.
We work closely with the neonatologists, paediatric hepatologists, gastroenterologists and paediatric surgeons and are involved in regular multidisciplinary meetings. We also have close links with the Paediatric Intensivists as two of our number also work on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
