Job summary
We are looking for a dynamic individual to join the Acute Medicine team of consultants at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill site.
The successful candidate will join a friendly and engaged team of 12, with responsibility for the front door acute medical care of patients, including take, AMU short stay admissions and Same Day Ambulatory Care. The Emergency Care Improvement Support Team (ECIST) recently visited our same day emergency care unit (SDEC) and highly commended the unit for its good SDEC practice. ECIST is a clinically led national NHS team designed by clinicians to help health and care systems deliver high quality emergency care. You will also work closely with our colleagues from Emergency Medicine and other medical sub-specialties and with primary care and community services.
The post will include the requirement to contribute to the out-of-hours on call rota and deliver seven-day care. We are an expanding and evolving service; join us and help develop a great clinical, academic and management team.
This post will provide support to the Modernising Medicine transformation project, which will build upon areas of good practice at Kings, and draw on innovative practices at a regional and a national level. The appointee will be joining an expanding team of multidisciplinary professionals to support senior clinical decision-making throughout our medical pathway.
Main duties of the job
This substantive Consultant post-holder will join the existing Acute Medicine Consultant team and is part of a Trust-approved initiative to appoint Consultants to continue the development of a comprehensive 7/7 Acute Medicine Service with the expansion of same day emergency care supported by clinically lead pathway design. The remit of the post-holder will be to work within the multidisciplinary team to provide an efficient and safe service for the assessment and management of acutely ill medical patients. Major areas of Acute Medicine at Kings include the interface with Emergency Medicine and other medical specialties and Ambulatory Emergency Care.
It is expected that the appointee will contribute actively to audit and research, developing research in an area of their interest if they wish.

The post will be based at Denmark Hill and the proposed Job Plan is attached (this is subject to change).
There will be a minimum of 10 programmed activities; 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with 1.5 Programmed Activity being allocated for Supporting Professional Activities. Weekend working is planned and will be part of the 10 PA allocation. The appropriate supplement will be paid for any on-call commitment. The job plan is based on the provision of a Consultant delivered service seven days a week and into the evening in accordance with principles of Acute Medicine endorsed by the Royal College of Physicians and NHS England (London). The weekend/ on-call/ out-of-hours commitment may evolve as the establishment is increased and Modernising Medicine optimises clinical pathways. Currently the Acute Physicians (by rotation) support the Acute Medical take extended hours Monday to Friday with planned attendance at weekends to cover the Ambulatory Care Unit and AMU. Weekend take duties are currently under review. It is envisaged these will be shared across the acute and general physicians with all consultants making a contribution to the weekend on call and overnight on-call rota. These duties are subject to change as the needs of the trust, care group and department evolves and develops; any substantial change to working practice would form part of a formal job planning review.
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

- Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with Kings College London / KHP
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Together with the other Acute and General Internal Medicine Consultants, to provide a service for Acute and General Medicine. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
- Shared responsibility with the other Acute Medicine and contributing GIM Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for medicine on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for out-patient and/ or ambulatory clinic commitments as agreed with the Divisional management team.
- Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
- Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
