Working Part time: 30 hours per week

Monday to Sunday working between the hours of 7.30am - 18:00pm

An exciting opportunity to work within the Phlebotomy Department .

The phlebotomy team provides essential services both within the Trust and the wider health care community. This post includes working within The Countess of Chester Hospital on inpatient wards, outpatient services, as well as clinic settings. We also provide services at the 1829 Building located on The Countess of Chester Hospital Site for GP bloods and offsite locations that include a GP Phlebotomy Hub in Ellesmere Port and ward/outpatient services in Ellesmere Port Hospital. This role includes working at all of the listed locations.

The Phlebotomy team covers weekend duties on a rotational basis; therefore flexibility of the successful candidate is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide supervision and staff support for all existing phlebotomy staff and those in training, to ensure that phlebotomy practice is of a high standard and that correct procedures are adhered to consistently.
  • To deputise for the phlebotomy manager when required as the named contact for the Phlebotomy Service concerning operational issues
  • Support the Phlebotomy manager with rotas, day to day running of the service and contingency plans when needed.
  • In the absence of the Phlebotomy Manager, attend meetings and provide departmental reports.
  • Set and maintain high standards of blood collection
  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
  • Recording collection of blood sample via electronic method
  • Ensuring that incidents are reported via the Datix incident reporting system and help to investigate any issues raised.
  • Undertake venepuncture, cannulation, blood cultures and venesection and train others and competency assess in these techniques
  • Perform stock rotation and stock management

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust employs over 5916 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 411,000. This includes 361,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
