As we embark on opening a new Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and take ownership of a Mobile Research Unit (MRU) we are looking for an enthusiastic competent Registered Nurse with experience of being involved in the delivery of clinical research studies or a nurse with a strong clinical background and significant post registration experience who is interested in working as a Research Nurse.

The Countess of Chester Research and Innovation department is looking for a forward thinking, positive, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Acute & General Medicine Clinical Research Delivery Team. Experience of working in an acute NHS care settings is essential. The post is clinically based to support research across medical specialties. The post holder will be expected to provide support and cover for other members of the team.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in several different types of academic and commercial NIHR Portfolio studies and you will be expected to support trials delivered not only on site but also through our new Mobile Research Unit (MRU).

Informal visits or contact by telephone/email are encouraged in order for applicants to best understand the expectations of the role.

Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate will be joining an expanding team and will be responsible for the day to day running of their assigned NIHR Portfolio studies as well as positively contributing to the team objectives.
  • Excellent communication and team playing skills are vital as you will work closely with existing team members and play a pivotal role in the screening, clinical assessment, recruitment and follow up of patients.
  • A key aspect of the role is collaborative working. You will therefore need to be able to show initiative and confidence in the ability to interact with individuals at all levels. You will need to be able to autonomously plan, adapt and manage competing priorities and support the developmental needs of colleagues and any direct reports.
  • Good IT skills are essential as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines, a high standard of accuracy and good attention to detail.
  • Research experience would be advantageous but not essential as we can provide comprehensive training and support for the right individual who is up to the challenge and who has a keen interest in clinical research within the NHS.
  • Recent clinical experience in a secondary care setting is a requirement and you will be expected to uphold your clinical skills where relevant to the role in addition to developing new ones as appropriate.
  • Travelling to the Ellesmere Port site is likely to be required in order to support study participants needs.

About us

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 5916 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 411,000. This includes 361,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
