Job summary

Working Full Time : 10 Sessions per week

Applications are invited for a new permanent consultant post in General Surgery, with a specialist interest in Upper GI Surgery.

The successful candidate will be a fulltime permanent appointment. The Upper GI team at the Countess of Chester deals with the full range of benign oesophogastric disease. Regarding malignant disease, our team liaise with our regional tertiary centres.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would be expected to complement our existing team of consultants and integrate within our team to provide a complete General Surgery service. The successful candidate would be expected to have a subspeciality interest in Upper GI surgery with evidence of independent practice in Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and anti-reflux surgery. To complement our existing department, it would be desirable to have experience in ERCP and laparoscopic hernias. We would want the successful candidate to lead on and help drive forward our acute cholecystectomy service, so experience within this field would also be desirable.

In addition to the management of general surgical cases and participation in a Consultant Surgeon of the Week (CSOW) rota.

All consultants are expected to participate in the on-call rota (1 in 10 following appointment).

The Countess of Chester holds a national reputation for excellence in Research. The successful candidate would be expected to have experience of involvement in NIHR portfolio studies and would ideally have been PI for one of these. We would want the successful candidate to have experience of supervising Deanery Resident doctors and Foundation doctors, and to have a keen interest in training.

About us

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

o The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.o Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.o Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
