An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fulltime, permanent Learning and Organisational Development Practitioner (L&OD) within our team at the Countess of Chester Hospital. We would love to hear from people who have a background in working with people and a passion for developing others.

Job Summary

The Learning and Organisational Development Practitioner contributes to the delivery of a high-profile, proactive and professional L&OD service for the Trust. The aim of the team is to improve individual, team and organisational performance through a range of activities including leadership development programmes, talent management, coaching & mentoring, staff engagement, change management and behavioural change interventions.

Key requirements of this post include supporting the L&OD team to administrate and deliver activities alongside the planning and regular delivery/facilitation of a range of in-house training including: How to conduct appraisals, team development and leadership development programmes. The postholder will work in partnership with key stakeholders across the hospital and represent the L&OD team at meetings.

The post holder will be required to work under the guidance of the service leads and be able to plan and prioritise their own work.

Main duties of the job

  1. Support a portfolio of L&OD interventions to support the achievement of the Trust's Leadership Framework, Talent management and Succession Planning Strategy and broader team and cultural development aligned to the National NHS People Promises.
  2. Work with the Senior L&OD Manager to effectively scope out requirements for projects; facilitating interventions, as agreed, that support change management and enable service and cultural change.
  3. Support the delivery of leadership development interventions, including personal and team development, engagement and managing/leading change; at various levels across the Trust.
  4. Design/deliver appropriate staff engagement initiatives in collaboration with the Reward and Recognition Group in order to positively impact upon staff satisfaction levels.
  5. Support the delivery and administration of a coaching and mentoring service.
  6. Plan schemes of work, produce lesson plans and deliver training on a wide range of non-clinical topics to meet the needs of staff across the organisation. Deliver training using a wide variety of training methods taking into account different learning styles. The training sessions can be for individuals, small and large groups and cover all levels and disciplines across the Trust.
  7. To facilitate engagement initiatives across the organisation.
  8. Deliver presentations to divisional level colleagues.
  9. Work flexibly with People and OD team colleagues to deliver an effective service.

About us

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
