Following successful application for project funding the Countess of Chester Hospital are delighted to host the role of Attraction and Retention lead on behalf of our health and social care colleagues within the Cheshire West region.

This role will develop and implement a range of attraction and retention initiatives and activities in line with the Cheshire West System, and the Cheshire West partners to address challenges within the Health care support worker and AHP workforce.

The successful post holder will be required to work collaboratively across all organisations within the partnership to plan and develop strategies of attraction, recruitment, development, and retention of HCSWs and AHPs. The role would work closely with providers retention and resourcing leads / HR departments to share best practice and remove duplication as well as acting as a conjugate to wider regional and national programmes led via NHS, Local authority and ICB.

Main duties of the job

  • Scoping current identified Workforce capacity and demand within the Cheshire west system relating to AHP and Unqualified Health Care Support Workers from across NHS, Local Authority and Home Care providers
  • Understand the range of benefits and terms and conditions of employment identifying where inequality exists across the system
  • Develop perspective candidate programme, including focus on those who may come from underrepresented groups
  • Holding regular action learning sets and peer support sessions with newly commenced (less than 2 years) AHP & unqualified Support Worker workforce on regular intervals providing pastoral support where appropriate to sign post support where appropriate.
  • Support the onboarding process for new employees but prior to commencement to reduce attrition post offer stage
  • Working in partnership with providers to develop and expand the awareness and attractiveness of roles
  • Work on wider employee engagement initiatives to benefit system level initiatives
  • Supporting the development and delivery of the areas retention action plan
  • Support the Trust in developing its Workforce supply pathways to diversify these to increase supply from previously underrepresented socio demographic groups

About us

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
