This is a Full Time post although applications are welcomed from those wishing to work less than full time.

Offering candidates a unique opportunity to train in a busy and supportive Department with an enthusiastic and dedicated consultant team with a wide range of backgrounds and specialist interests. We have a good track record for non-career middle grades moving onto training posts supported by educational teaching, learning and assessment opportunities equivalent to those on national vocational programmes. The successful applicant will be assigned a consultant mentor for the duration of the post.

The department allocates time for extra activity sessions such as at a major Trauma Centre, with the NW ambulance service to enhance pre-hospital skills.

The Emergency Department at COCH is one of the major accident units for Cheshire, Merseyside and Flintshire and currently handles around 80,000 cases per annum. The Department deals with the full range of surgical, medical and paediatric emergencies and has full back-up (Radiology, Pathology and Anaesthetics), together with the normal range of in-patient specialties found within an acute hospital. Consultant presence in the Department until midnight, and a guaranteed 30 minute response time for on-call emergency attendance.

Main duties of the job

The duties will cover the whole range of clinical responsibilities, working equally in both Minors and Majors, working closely with the ANP and ENP teams and providing them with senior support.

You will be expected to provide a significant personal commitment to the assessment, treatment and disposal of patients attending the Emergency Department.

You will be supporting 24/7 middle grade cover for the department. There is consultant presence from 0900hrs until midnight 7 days per week. Between the hours of midnight and 0800hrs the evening consultant provides ongoing support on an 'on-call' basis.

You will be accountable to the consultants in Emergency Medicine. You will be responsible for carrying out ward rounds on the Emergency Assessment Unit from time to time on a shared basis with the other middle grade and senior doctors. You will be expected to take a lead role in the management of acutely ill and trauma patients.

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
