Newborn Hearing Screener

Job summary

We are looking for a reliable individual with good communication skills, at ease working with very young babies in their first few days of life, as well as their families.

You will be working independently, as part of a team, to deliver a family friendly yet professional experience for both mother and baby during the hearing screening process.

Full training will be provided, which will include eLearning modules with assessment, practical skill training with assessment and an External Competency Assessment (ECA) will also need to be completed. You will also be registered for the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners (Newborn Hearing) which you will complete over 18 to 24 months.

Whilst this is a part time role, you will be expected to work a rota system, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Hours per week: 15

Main duties of the job

Key Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identify which babies require screening by using the Screening database (S4H) and the Patient Administration database (DCS) and by liaising with the ward staff.
  • Communicate with and provide information for parents concerning hearing screening and obtain informed consent for the screening test and for data collection.
  • Carry out hearing screening of new born babies within the Maternity Unit, Special Care Baby Unit and Outpatient Clinic as required.
  • Record clinical and test data accurately and ensure timely transfer of information to parents, team members, the Manager, Midwives and other health care professionals.
  • Facilitate the smooth running of the programme in association with the Manager by maintaining up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to the post, and by participating in clinical audit at local, regional and national levels.
  • Promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment, endorsing a family friendly approach to care, ensuring that parents and families retain their dignity and individuality at all times.
  • Ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Manager.
  • Attend meetings and training events at departmental, regional and national level as required by the service.
