Job summary

We are looking to recruit 2 Paediatric Specialty Doctor's to be part of our friendly Paediatric Department for a 6 month fixed term post from September 2024.

The successful applicant will join us to help deliver a range of children's services and work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high quality care for our patients across our integrated acute service.

The role will include:

  • Day-to-day care for a diverse and challenging mix of paediatric and neonatal patients on the Special Care Baby Unit, Postnatal Ward and general Paediatric Ward (our neonatal services will be returning to the Macclesfield site in the near future following the rearrangements that were in place over the pandemic).
  • Reviewing patients attending outpatient appointments, ad hoc reviews and supporting specialist clinics.
  • Provision of support, supervision and education for the junior doctors.
  • Taking a role in the organisation of the daily work load.
  • You will be expected to take part in audit, clinical governance and the education programme within the department.
  • Taking part in research opportunities within the department through our links to the local children's research networks in Mersey and Manchester

Up to date APLS (Advanced Life Support) and NLS (Newborn Life Support) certifications are essential to commence work.

Main duties of the job

A middle tier doctor in the paediatric setting at ST3 level and above would be expected to be able to do the following:

  • Review patients who have been assessed by junior colleagues and make robust management plans
  • Prescribe medication or treatment courses according to recognised local/regional/national guidelines
  • Competently perform practical skills including venous cannulation, capillary blood gas sampling, venesection, lumbar puncture in a neonate and child, neonatal intubation and management of a basic airway in any child, intraosseous access
  • Provide advanced paediatric life support and neonatal life support
  • Liaise effectively with other departments, specialties and hospitals to obtain required tests and opinions and to make referrals
  • Provide level 3 safeguarding of children including spotting signs of abuse and risk factors thereof
  • Provide appropriate health promotion and signpost to supportive services and mental health resources.
  • Support handovers to the oncoming team of doctors to provide seamless and uninterrupted care
  • Manage the ward and the flow of acute patients alongside the nursing team and the wider senior staff
