Job summary
This post is covering maternity leave of one of our substantive Consultant Acute Physicians at East Cheshire. The post will have management and clinical responsibility for the patients on the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU) and any appropriate patients in ED. The acute medical number of admissions ranges between 25 - 30 per day. The Acute Physician sees new admissions until 8pm (Monday to Friday). Currently each acute physician covers Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) on a rota basis until 8pm (Monday to Friday). The appointed Acute Physician will be required to cover SDEC also and cover at least 1 late per week. On Fridays, the on-call physician will then cover SDEC from 5-8pm. The on-call physician also does post-take ward rounds during the weekend, except on Mondays when this is undertaken by the Acute Physicians.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will have a regular commitment to leading the 'on-take' medical team based in the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and MAU. In addition, he/she will support the A&E staff with the assessment of patients with acute medical problems. He/she will play a key role in co-ordinating the junior medical staff to ensure that patients are assessed and either admitted or discharged in line with 4-hour A&E targets.
The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly and achieve high quality care with particular emphasis on:
- Achieving the target of 95% patients being admitted or discharged from A&E/SDEC within four hours.
- Developing appropriate services to meet clinical needs within available resources.
- Working together with colleagues in primary care and the community to ensure effective management of acutely ill patients.
- Participation in the education and training of medical students, doctors and professions allied to medicine including those in primary care.
- Ensuring that optimal use is made of all resources allocated to the post.
- Demonstration of a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance.
- Further developing services as indicated by recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians, NICE and specialist societies.
All consultants are required to contribute to service development aligned with national and local expectations and needs. There is a monthly ED senior management team meeting, and a weekly meeting of consultants and service managers.
About us
NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level. For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint. The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed year's experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.
