Job summary
Under the direction of a qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner, give support to patients and carers, carrying out delegated clinical and therapeutic tasks as part of a multi-professional programme of nursing care.
The trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner will participate in a training pathway to enable them to undertake formal training and accreditation as a qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner
Hours per week: 37.5
Main duties of the job
Carry out a range of clinical skills under supervision and in accordance with agreed competency frameworks.
This will include:
To learn how to apply casts to patients as directed by Orthopaedic Practitioner, working towards the BOA/RCN[SOTN]/AOT Casting Techniques Certificate.
To learn the correct way to hold limbs whilst a cast is be applied. Application of Casts/Back slabs/splints and the use of the plaster saw for removal of cast under supervision by an Orthopaedic Practitioner.
To develop, implement and review Plaster and wound care plans with individuals.
To undertake clinical tasks, specimen collection and testing, capillary blood sugars for identified patients.
To carry out aseptic procedures.
To undertake simple dressings and obtain wound swabs.
To communicate and contribute to clinical, social and psychological findings to trained staff.
To assist patients to maintain optimum levels of independence using therapeutic interventions as directed by trained staff.
To provide emotional and physical support to patients and to document/record accurately all aspects of nursing/casting tasks undertaken, as delegated by Orthopaedic Practitioner/Staff Nurse.
To understand ordering work-based supplies and stationery and for maintaining stocks within the plaster room.
