Job summary

The Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. The successful candidate will join Dr M Babores, Dr J Gallagher and Dr T Nagarajan within the Respiratory Medicine department.

The consultants in respiratory medicine are based on the Respiratory ward (4) which comprises 28 beds, including 4 single rooms and a negative pressure room.

This post is for 10 PA's with the possibility of additional sessions subject to further discussion with the Clinical Lead.

The East Cheshire Trust was established in 1993 and is the main provider of secondary health services for people living in East Cheshire. There are currently four hundred and forty-six beds available for general and acute services across the Trust. Each year staff treat around 20,000 patients in our hospitals, see over 116,000 out patients and manage 48,000 attendances in the Accident and Emergency department.

During the last three years the Trust has undergone a programme of change to strengthen its senior clinical leadership and management. As part of this restructuring, the consultants in Respiratory Medicine have taken on senior leadership and educational roles. Dr M Babores is the Clinical Director (Acute and Integrated Community Care Services) and Dr Gallagher the TSTL for medicine.

East Cheshire NHS Trust has a well-developed pleural service including thoracoscopy, and insertion of IPC.

Both factors have created the need for a fourth Respiratory consultant.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the management of all the patients in the Respiratory Ward and help provide a respiratory in reach service. It will be expected that the post holder will be heavily involved in the management of inpatients with at least twice weekly ward rounds and further visits to the ward during the week to facilitate discharges and help with management of acutely unwell patients.

They will undertake a weekly bronchoscopy/ EBUS session and help with pleural procedures such as Medical Thoracoscopy.

They will attend weekly video-conference MDT with South Manchester University teaching Hospital and local radiology meeting fortnightly.

The appointee will have an important role in the training of junior medical staff in the assessment and management of the acutely ill medical patients as well contributing to MRCP PACES teaching and postgraduate medical training of foundation year doctors and speciality trainees.

The post holder will be part of the Acute take on a rota basis on weekdays (1:9). The trust is compliant with the Royal College guidance and provides consultant support 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is provided by the acute physicians except during the weekend which is undertaken on an on call basis (1:13) by Consultants working within the Medicine arena. The consultant on call on the weekend has Monday off as rest day.

The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly and achieve high quality care.
