Job summary

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust are looking for a full-time (10PA) or part-time Consultant Microbiologist. The base will be a Path Links site by agreement with the successful candidate. The post holder is expected to provide cross cover duties to other hospitals covered by Path Links.

There is a one in six out of hours commitment, for which full compensatory time off is given for time worked. The employing organisation is Path Links NHS Pathology Service, which is a directorate of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG). Path Links is a partnership between United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULH) and NLaG.

The appointee will be fully involved in the Path Links Pathology Directorate and, as such, will have full access to a patient base of over 1 million within the county of Lincolnshire. There is much potential for interesting research work to be carried out involving this largely rural population.

You will be encouraged to pursue your specialist interests, and if desired you will be able to undertake duties in the relevant clinical areas by arrangement. In particular, further development of the OPAT service, or development of services within specialist units is encouraged.

Main duties of the job

As a senior employee of the NLAG Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to junior doctors and medical students
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Operational Group's services plans

Job description

Job responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology and Infection Prevention & Control service to the NLAG and ULHT Trusts and other users of the service.

Clinical Work

The appointee, together with Consultant Microbiologist colleagues, will be expected to contribute to the following:

  • Offering timely clinical advice regarding the diagnosis, management and prevention of infections to hospital and community based clinicians. Ward rounds will be undertaken as needed, including close working with specialist units including ICU, haematology/oncology and orthopaedics.
  • The appointee will take a leadership role within the hospital in matters relating to infection management.
  • The appointee will be expected to attend the monthly Directorate, audit and clinical governance meetings. The appointee will need to participate in appropriate hospital or Trust committees as required (e.g. Drugs & Therapeutics, Risk Management, Mortality reviews, Clinical Governance).
  • The appointee will be required to maintain the close working relationships with the Consultants in health protection for PHE Yorkshire & Humber and PHE East Midlands.
  • A commitment to Infection Prevention and Control, and antimicrobial stewardship activities is expected, with consultants taking lead roles according to their interests and the needs of the service. The appointee will be expected to attend the NLAG or ULHT Infection Prevention & Control Committee, and to take a lead role in the event of outbreaks or other infection incidents on their hospital site.
  • Alongside the other microbiology consultants, the appointee are expected to participate in the development and update of the comprehensive Path Links antimicrobial formulary and prescribing guidelines.
  • The appointee will participate in the departments clinical audit program.
  • At present, video conferences between Consultant Microbiologists are held daily to discuss patients and handover.
  • Each laboratory has two daily meetings (huddles) as part of its Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programme.
