Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology to join our forward thinking department. This is a replacement post and the successful appointee will join a team of SAS Grade Doctor Colleagues in the department providing services across Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole District Hospital, base site to be confirmed. The vacancy is for a full time permanent post and includes elective activity plus on call duties.

The Ophthalmology Departments at NLaG NHS Foundation Trust are based at the 3 sites namely Scunthorpe General Hospital (SGH), Diana Princess of Wales Hospital (DPOW) and Goole District Hospital (GDH) This post is on a Trustwide basis, including on call provision, and a base site will be discussed as part of job planning for the successful candidate. The Ophthalmology Departments serve a population of nearly 430,000. Daily activity consists of out-patient clinics, surgery and 24 hours on call cover.

Main duties of the job

The Departments are well equipped with a full range of clinical support services. The out-patient departments consist of 8 consulting rooms at SGH and 6 consulting rooms at DPOW. Both sites are very well equipped with modern equipment including OCT machines, Fundus Cameras, A/B Scan with UBM facilities, Argon and Yag/SLT lasers, Humphrey VF analyser and digital FFA & ICGA facilities.

Goole Hospital has 3 fully equipped consulting rooms with Heidelberg OCT /FFA provision, Humphrey VF analyser, a Canon Fundus Camera and Zeiss Laser system along with a dedicated Ophthalmic theatre set up for modern intraocular microsurgery along with an injection Suite.

As an employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to junior doctors and medical students
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Operational Group's services plans

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post would suit a good team player dedicated to high quality patient care. The opportunity exists to work in a non-hierarchical setting and offer a wide range of ophthalmic procedures in this busy hospital Trust.

The post will be essentially those of a post-fellowship Registrar reporting directly to his/her Consultant and would include:

The post holder will assist in providing day-to-day care and management of patients on the ward and in outpatients.

The post-holder will provide expert assistance to the Consultant in the operating theatre, and on such occasions as are necessary for service provision should act as First Surgeon.

The post-holder will help to provide continuity of care, and service provision in the absence of the named Consultant, and this to include outpatient and inpatient services.

The post-holder will assist in the provision of an Emergency service as part of an on-call rota.

The post-holder will be assisted in developing his/her own areas of interest and expertise to augment the provision of the service. The post-holder will maintain his standard of performance by keeping knowledge and skills up to date.

The post-holder will provide cover for absent colleagues in line with his/her service agreements with the trust, both within and outside normal working hours, along with flexible use of time depending on the needs of the department

The post-holder may be required from time to time to assist in the provision of care to the patients of Consultants other than those specifically named in his/her job plan.

The post-holder will be required to take part in the administrative work of the Unit, in the dictation of discharge letters, results and clinic letters, ensuring that these are kept up-to-date in the absence of the Consultant.

The post-holder will assist in ensuring that preoperative checks have been carried out and investigations are to hand.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation & ST1/CT1 competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice

  • Evidence of 4 years (FTE) postgraduate training in the UK (or equivalent training) of which at least 2 year's training must be in relevant specialty or a recognised equivalent training.
