Job summary

The Medical Engineering department has responsibility for managing and supporting a wide range of medical, therapeutic and diagnostic devices used throughout the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, to ensure it operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime.

Medical equipment represents one of the organisation's most substantial assets and the way in which equipment is purchased managed and used can directly influence the quality of care delivered to patients. Medical equipment can also involve risks to both patients and staff particularly if it is used improperly.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the operational management of the Medical Engineering team based at Scunthorpe General Hospital in Scunthorpe. The post holder will take particular responsibility for planning and organising the effective and efficient delivery of a comprehensive medical device management service to a high standard of safety and accountability. This also includes the effective management of an equipment library.

The post holder will liaise with senior clinical and technical staff throughout the organisation to provide expert technical advice on a wide range or medical device related issues.

The post holder will report to the head of medical engineering to assist in developing and delivering a comprehensive Trust-wide medical device management service, to meet the requirements of MHRA, CQC, clinical governance and other statutory guidelines.

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Degree HNC/HND in a relevant engineering or science based subject. Able to satisfy the requirements for incorporated membership of a relevant professional body.

Desirable

  • Registration as a Clinical Technologist or willing to work towards accreditation.

Occupational experience

Essential

  • Experienced in the use of complex precision test equipment with the skills to interpret and analyse results
  • Experience in applying workshop technology to patient-critical equipment and techniques in healthcare.
  • Extensive practical experience in electro medical engineering workshop practices and techniques with at least 6 years practice in supervising preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement

Desirable

  • Experience in applying workshop technology to patient-critical equipment and techniques in healthcare.
  • Specialist training on the maintenance and repair of a range of medical devices
