Applications are invited for a Specialist Doctor in Colorectal Surgery at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM).
Fixed term position for 12 months
University Hospital of North Midlands is a large acute teaching hospital and major trauma centre in Staffordshire with two sites- Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke on Trent and County Hospital in Stafford.
We offer a broad range of medical and surgical specialties have good transport links, being close to the M6 and A50, and lie roughly centrally between Manchester to the North and Birmingham to the South, Derby and Shrewsbury to the East and West.
We are looking for a dynamic, high calibre Specialist Doctor in Colorectal Surgery who has the ability to deliver first class clinical care on a day to day basis within this extremely busy environment, participate in the on-call and be prepared to participate fully in undergraduate teaching.
This post has been established to support the Colorectal services provided due to increased local demand. The appointee would be expected to have close working relationship with Upper GI, Gastroenterology, gynaecology and Emergency Department. There is on call, ward cover, theatres and clinics included in this role. Recent experience of working in a busy acute trust is essential.
Main duties of the job
This post will provide a comprehensive colorectal and general surgical service, as well as emergency surgical cover at the Trust. Access to CEPOD is included in the emergency duties. The post holder will provide outpatient clinics for colorectal surgery. The post holder will undertake elective surgical lists in colorectal surgery and general surgery.
You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
You have responsibility for the work and supervision of junior medical staff who work with you and you will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers.

Qualifications
Essential
- Full registration with GMC
- Success in Intercollegiate specialty examination or overseas equivalent or specialty accreditation if acquired prior to introduction of such examinations.
- At least 6 years' experience in a relevant specialty.
- FRCS (UK) part 1 or equivalent.
Desirable
- MD or other Higher Degree
- Entry on Specialist Register or in U.K. training scheme and within 6 months of award of CCST at time of interview.
Clinical Experience & Training
Essential
- Clinical training and experience in General Surgery, colorectal surgery
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
Desirable
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in relevant specialty.
